Genoa sightseeing route departing from the cruise terminal
Old Genoa is a superb city that is an absolute must-see. It’s true that it’s easy to miss, as the motorway doesn’t pass through the city centre. However, if you’re on a cruise, the pier is located in the city centre, making it ideal for exploring on foot.
You won’t regret the 8.5 km (minimum) walk, as this city is brimming with treasures of beauty.
Forti di Genova
The forts of Genoa are a series of military fortifications dating from different periods that the Republic of Genoa built to defend the urban territory of the Ligurian capital throughout its history. The construction projects were also resumed and used during the Napoleonic era, the Risorgimento and during the First and Second World Wars. This defensive system represents the longest city walls in Europe and the second longest in the world.
Moneglia - Bonassola
Hike involving 5–6 hours of walking. The hike starts on foot towards Deiva Marina beach. It continues with a steep climb to reach a promontory and then descends to Bonassola. Afterwards, a 1½-hour hike to Levanto is optional. From Bonassola (15 minutes) or Levanto (18 minutes), you must take the train to return to Moneglia.
Framura – Bonassola – Sella dei Bagari – Levanto
A very lovely walk overall, ideal for getting off the heavily touristed trails of the Cinque Terre.
The route starts in Framura; it’s magnificent as far as Bonassola, but less interesting on the way to Levanto.
Cinque Terre - Levanto to Monterosso
Trail in the Cinque Terre region from Levanto to Monterosso, the first village in the Cinque Terre (near Genoa and Pisa in Italy), following the SVA trail closest to the coast.
Levanto is one of the best places to visit the five villages by train and go hiking.
This allows you to walk from Levanto to Monterosso without taking the train at the start. Return by train.
Sant Antonio from Colle di Gritta
An original approach to this beautiful peak west of Monterosso. Here, we follow a wide circular ridge path passing via Monte Negro (444 m) and Monte Focone (486 m). The views are spectacular on both the northern side (Levanto) and the southern side (Monterosso). The Verde Azzurro path is only used for the return journey.
Monterosso to Vernazza via Madonna di Soviore, Madonna di Reggio and Monte Santa Croce
Hike starting from Monterosso al Mare, exploring the local heritage and offering beautiful views of the hinterland and the coast. From the village’s railway station, cross through the old part of the village, passing beneath the Aurora Tower, then climb up to the important 10th-century sanctuary of the Madonna di Soviore; follow the ridge path via Monte Santa Croce before a pleasant and fairly easy descent to Vernazza via the 13th-century Madonna di Reggio.
From Monterosso to Vernazza
This is one of the most beautiful trails on the Cinque Terre coast. Passing through vineyards and forests with Mediterranean vegetation, it offers magnificent views at every turn with the sea as a backdrop. Fairly easy despite a steep climb at the start, it allows you to soak up the atmosphere of the Cinque Terre!
(!) User comment 30-09-2025: there is a charge for the trail or it is included in the train ticket
