Description of the walk

Start from Monterosso station.

(S) From the station, head towards the seafront and follow the path as close to the sea as possible towards the headland, passing beneath the Aurora Tower.

(1) Walk up the main street (Via Roma) and reach a car park entrance on the right-hand side as you leave the village, just before a right-hand bend.

(2) Take the steps, path no. 509, opposite the car park, which climbs towards Madonna di Soviore to the left of the main street. On the climb, take a narrow lane and turn immediately after a bend to the right. Leave this lane after the next right-hand bend and continue left along the signposted path.

(3) Cross the main road and continue uphill along path no. 509, which passes in front of a shrine, to the shrine of Madonna di Soviore.

(4) Walk along the south-west side of the Madonna di Soviore and follow path no. 591. Join the SP38 road and follow it to the right for 800 m to the Passo del Termine.

(5) At the road junction, follow the AV5T ridge path towards Sella (blocked by two concrete blocks).

(6) At the junction of marked paths, head slightly to the right and climb for about 300 m to Monte Santa Croce (the highest point of the hike).

(7) Descend back to the previous junction.

(6) Follow the AV5T to the right towards Foce di Drignana.

(8) At the road junction, take the road downhill to the right, then the first left. At the next crossroads, turn right. Follow the road for about 900 m.

(9) After a left-hand bend in the road, take the path marked no. 508 on the left towards Madonna di Reggio, then head down towards Vernazza (roadworks in progress – see practical information). Cross the road and head down towards the Madonna di Reggio sanctuary.

(10) Walk past the main façade of the sanctuary and through its grounds to take thefirst path on the right (marked No. 508) to reach Vernazza station (E).

Notes

Given the condition of the coastal path (SVA) and its closure between Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, it is not possible to walk all the way back to the starting point. The return to the starting point can only be made by train (departures every 30 minutes – cost: €4.00).

(10) Repairs to path no. 508 are currently underway from its starting point on the road to Vernazza, with a modified starting point on the road, raised by 50 metres and poorly signposted; however, the original route is still accessible further down, although it is not maintained.
There is a picnic spot at the summit of Monte Santa Croce, with trees and shade.

Worth a visit

From Monterosso al Mare, climb up to the promontory of San Christoforo, which separates the newer part of the village from the old and is home to the 18th-century Capuchin monastery.
There are no water points along the route except in the villages.

Crowds at the start and finish, but in between… not a soul

Very pleasant paths, quiet tarmac sections (at least in early May – plus the road taken from point 8 has restricted traffic): it’s all good! It’s worth noting that for swimming, Monterosso beach is much nicer than Vernazza’s (which is tiny, cluttered with boats, and I spotted quite a few jellyfish there)...

It’s nice to be able to explore a less-travelled route in Cinque Terre!
A mostly shaded route, with no major difficulties, heading inland.
As a result, there are fewer beautiful views of the coast than on other routes. A bit (too much) tarmac, but unavoidable on this route.
Thanks!

A lovely walk that takes you up into the hills and offers a change from the coastal paths. The climb isn’t steep and is easy going, and the section through the woodland is refreshing. Take care when crossing the road – cars can approach quickly.

No one else on this walk (only seven walkers in total!), far from the crowds in the villages, very varied; my only regret is that part of the route is on a road, though this can’t be avoided. There’s plenty of shade and some lovely views.
