Saint-Flour - Paulhac

This is the first of three stages of the Saint-Flour Planèze tour. It is the longest stage, passing through several small villages typical of the Planèze with their bread ovens, which provide welcome shelter for a short break in rainy weather. The very quiet paths and small roads run alongside meadows grazed by numerous herds of cattle in season.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Short tour of the Planèze de Saint-Flour in three days

Description of the walk

Departure from the Allées car park in the upper town of Saint-Flour, along Allée Georges Pompidou (D679).

(S/E) From the south-east corner of the car park, join Rue des Lacs (pedestrianised) and follow it to the left until you reach Place du Thuile.

(1) Turn right at the sharp angle, go through the Porte du Thuile, go down Rue des Planchettes and leave the cathedral on your left.

(2) Cross Avenue de Verdun (D961) and continue down Route du Pont de l'Escure until you reach the bridge of the same name.

(3) Two roads appear: take the one on the right and cross the river. Continue south-west on the small road, ignoring the roads that branch off to the left and then immediately to the right, until you reach the hamlet of Volzac after about 1.2 km.

(4) Cross the hamlet and head south-west on a small road which continues for 400 m and then becomes a track.

(5) Pass under the D921 and continue along the track. Join Rue des Lavoirs and follow it to enter Bouzentes.

(6) Cross the Grand Rue and follow the street opposite. Cross a small street on the left and, at the end of the street, turn right and then left onto Rue du Champ Marty. Continue north on this road. At the end of the tarmac, turn right onto a path that climbs uphill. At the top, continue north until you reach a crossroads.

(7) Cross the D44 with caution, continue on the road opposite and pass a pumping station on your left. Ignore a path on your right and continue on the main road signposted until you reach a stream.

(8) Just after crossing the stream, turn left (south-west). You will come out onto a small road; follow it to the right. Enter the village of Védernat via Route du Riou.

(9) At a crossroads, take Rue de la Roche, slightly to the left. Turn left along this street and cross Chemin du Dolmen and Chemin du Galgal on your right. At the crossroads (cross), turn right into Rue Chantaritsa.

(10) Take the first road on the left, at the corner of a building. Head south-southwest, then southwest, staying on the main road and ignoring all side roads.

(11) Come out onto the D116 and follow it to the right for about 100 metres. Then take the first road on the left. Turn right onto this road and, at the three-way junction, turn right.

(12) At the crossroads, go straight ahead. Return to the D116 and follow it to the left. Stay on this main road and enter Tanavelle.

(13) Turn right onto Rue du Café. At the end, turn right and then left to reach Place de la Mairie. Start walking around the square in a counterclockwise direction (church on your left).

(14) At the town hall and before Rue du Rêve, turn right onto a path. At the cross, turn left onto this path and go downhill.

(15) You will come to a small road; follow it to the left. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead on the road, which quickly becomes a path. Ignore a turn-off on the right and pass under a high-voltage power line.

(16) At the next intersection, turn right, pass a sewage treatment plant and cross a stream.

(17) At the T-junction, turn left and then right to leave the hamlet via a path heading north-west. You will come out onto a small road; follow it to the left.

(18) Cross the D16 with caution and continue on a small road opposite.

(19) Turn left with the main road and keep heading south-southwest until you reach the place called Le Fer.

(20) Take the first road on the left (south). Cross a stream and, after about 50 metres, take a path on the right. Head south-southwest, ignore a path on the right, then one on the left, and you will come to a fork.

(21) Keep left and continue south-west.

(22) At an intersection, turn right and head west-northwest.

(23) You will come out onto the D34. Follow it to the left, cross the hamlet of Loudier and enter the village of Paulhac.

(24) Leave the D34 and turn left onto Rue des Violettes. Return to the D34 and follow it to the left until you reach the church.

(25) Continue straight ahead (south) on the D34 and pass the town hall.

(26) At the triangular crossroads, turn left onto Route du Col de Prat de Bouc (D44). After about 100 metres, turn right onto Rue de Ribeyrol. You will immediately arrive at La Fréneraie guest house on the corner of Rue de Ribeyrol (S/E).
