Access to the start: From Saint-Flour, take the D10 then the D116 for about 14 km towards Villedieu and Alleuze Castle. In the hamlet of La Barge, park in the town hall car park. The signpost is on the D40, next to the road sign for the Grandval dam.
(S/E) At the signpost, turn around and take the sandy path between the low wall and the house. Follow this wide track for about 500m, which climbs up to the right.
(1) Leave it halfway up, turning left at a large pine tree. Cross the stile and enter the meadow. Continue straight ahead for about 150 metres. The path descends to a large tree, which you go around on your left. Stay on this track for 20 metres, then turn right at the hairpin bend. Continue straight ahead for 250 metres, crossing two steps in turn. The path enters the woods and climbs up to the hamlet of Surgit. Pass the square and the stone cross.
(2) At the crossroads at the end of the hamlet, take the D116 on the right, then a wide path on the left. Stay on this wide track, which climbs back up to the plateau for about 2 km, ignoring the intersections.
(3) At the crossroads, turn right onto another track that leads to the hamlet of Barry. At the first houses, the path becomes tarmac. Continue to the crossroads, then turn left onto the D40 for about 300 m.
(4) At the next crossroads, turn right twice. Pass the houses, keeping to the right, and continue along this track for about 750m.
(5) At the crossroads, turn left then right and head towards Languiroux. Pass through the hamlet, go past the bread oven and continue straight ahead on the small road.
(6) Just after the large house on the corner, take the path on the left. Continue straight ahead into the woods. Further on, stay on the left-hand path until you reach a meadow overlooking the Château d'Alleuze. Take the path on the right that descends the hillside. Cross the stream and go up to the right, then left onto a wider path to rejoin the road.
(7) At this point, you can visit the castle (30 minutes there and back). Turn around and follow the main path that passes by the cemetery.
(8) Turn left and follow the path back to the starting point (S/E).
