Description of the walk

Start in front of the town hall in Saint-Chély, Place de la Mairie.

Part of theGRP® Tour des Monts d'Aubrac,GR®65Way of St James, marked with red and white signs

(S) From the town hall, take Rue du Château eastwards, then the first street on the left as you leave Place de la Mairie (you can also take the second street or continue to the end of Rue du Château) to reach the D533 Aubrac road. Turn right heading east and, about 200 m after joining the D533, at the fork, take the road going uphill to the left. After about 700 m, you’ll reach the start of a path.

(1) Take this on the right. The track climbs steadily, mostly in the shade, until it reaches the hamlet of Belvezet after just over 2 km (junction with the road: table and benches, water point, information board about the Lord of Belvezet).

(2) Turn left and, about a hundred metres further on, just after the last houses on the right, take the path on the right. The path skirts the Neck de Belvezet (an ancient volcanic vent overlooking the hamlet) to the north and continues north-eastwards. After more than a kilometre, the path reaches the information panel “Le bout de l’Enfer”, marking the end of the dangerous crossing of the Aubrac by pilgrims on the Way of St James. A hundred metres further on, you reach a fork with a cross.

(3) Turn right (note: the path on the left is a variant of the Tour des Monts d'Aubrac). After more than 2 km, still heading north-east, you will reach the D987 road.

(4) Turn right onto it and reach Aubrac after about 900 m. At the junction in the middle of the hamlet, turn right towards the Maison de l'Aubrac.

(5) Follow the path which skirts the hamlet to the south-east, then heads north, crosses the D987, and runs alongside the former Sanatorium Royal Aubrac on the left.

(6) Pass the Col de Rigambal le Haut and continue for about 3 km through the heart of the Monts d'Aubrac, amongst herds and burons. At the end of this long and beautiful stretch, about 250 m after a farmstead below on the right, you will reach a crossroads.

(7) Continue straight ahead towards the east, ignoring any paths joining from the right or left. After almost 2 km, you will reach a junction, about fifty metres before the path becomes a road.

(8) Turn left and, after a half-circular route heading north, you’ll reach the D987. Turn left and continue along the road heading north-east to Nasbinals. Then head to the lodge (E) for today’s stop.

At the end of this fourth stage, we decided to stay in Montgros rather than Nasbinals, so as to shorten our fifth and final stage back to Aumont-Aubrac.
