The walk starts from the public car park in front of the village hall in Saint-Chély d'Aubrac.
The route from Saint-Chély to Aubrac follows theGR®®65, which is the Puy-en-Velay Way of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The return journey follows theGR®®6AandGR®®6: red and white markings in all cases.
(S/E) From the car park, head towards the road and turn right, crossing it, then follow the signs for Nasbinals.
(1) At the fork, take the D533 left towards Aubrac. Just after the bend, turn left and then immediately right onto the narrow path that winds its way up to the Saint-André lodge. Join the road above.
(2) Follow the road to the right for about 500 metres, then take the narrow path on the right which descends and then climbs up to a place called Del Sail. Continue north-east on the path leading to Belvezet, ignoring the paths branching off to the sides. This stone-lined path crosses the Aude stream.
(3) At Belvezet, follow the road on the left. After 150m, turn right onto the gravel path. Pass at the foot of the Neck de Belvezet. Continue on the marked trail, which keeps a general north-easterly direction despite a few bends.
(4) At the cross, take the path on the right. Continue north-east on the stony path and join the D987 road.
(5) Follow the road to the right and head towards the village of Aubrac. Note the large grey stone Virgin Mary statue on the right as you pass.
(6) Once in the village, turn right towards Saint-Chély. About 50 metres after the village exit sign, turn left onto a wide transhumance track before a large stone cross. You are now on theGR®®6A. The track quickly becomes a narrow, stony path and descends to the Ruisseau d'Aubrac.
(7) Take the footbridge to cross the stream and continue downhill, heading south then south-east to the Boralde de Saint-Chély.
(8) Turn right and take the footbridge over the stream (Boralde de Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac). Climb up opposite through the woods.
(9) At the crossroads, take the second path on the right (south-west). Pass the Croix de la Vaysse and, at the next crossroads, continue straight ahead to quickly reach the junction with theGR®®6(old Roman road).
(10) Follow theGR®®6to the right (west).
(11) Cross the large clearing south-southwest, taking the small grassy path on the left, which eventually rejoins the Roman road.
(12) Continue south-west and cross a large clearing, ignoring the paths on the right.
(13) At an elevation of 1176 metres, take a sharp left turn. After about 250 metres (buildings), take the path that branches off to the right. Cross a road and follow the small road opposite that enters the hamlet of Les Enfrux.
(14) Turn right (small sign for Saint-Chély viaGR®®6). Go straight up between pastures and woods to Verminière.
(15) Turn left. The path, paved with large stones and lined with rocks, continues to climb then descends towards Saint-Chély. As you approach the first houses, the track gives way to a gentle, almost flat path that leads to a road.
(16) Follow the road to the right and ignore the path opposite. However, there is an alternative route if you take this path, passing in front of the cemetery and crossing the Pont des Pélerins, a medieval bridge that has been remarkably restored. It is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Way of St James. Follow the village streets and head east to return to the car park where you started.
(1) At the fork you took on the way there, continue straight ahead and then turn left to return to the starting point (S/E).
