Rilly-la-Montagne walks

Everythird weekend in July, Les Secrets du Petit Bonhomme are given a new twist, allowing you to explore the village of Rilly-la-Montagne via the existingPR79 trail with a few variations. Interesting viewpoints, a link between the forest, the village and the vineyards, and features related to the village’s floral displays. Route available all year round, except in the forest during the hunting season.

This hike will take you across the Montagne de Reims along beautiful paths with almost no tarmac. Much of it is marked by the Randonneurs & pèlerins 51 association. You will meet walkers from all over the world, especially Holland and Belgium. The outward or return journey is by TER train between Aÿ station and Rilly-la-Montagne station, where you can park for free. It is accessible from Paris either by TER via Epernay or by TGV via Reims.

This is a long hike through woods and vineyards, accessible by train from the TER stations in Rilly-la-Montagne or Germaine. It is 23 km long, but can be shortened to 18 km by taking the train from Rilly-la-Montagne to Germaine. Its main attractions are the route of remarkable trees and a beautiful view of Reims in good weather.

This lovely forest walk in Rilly-la-Montagne is ideal for families and nature lovers who want to stretch their legs on a simple and pleasant route. We did it with a baby in a baby carrier, so it was no problem (however, it is not suitable for pushchairs).

This is a hike for lovers of beautiful trees. From the Maison Forestière du Cadran to Pourcy, you can admire several remarkable trees, whose history is recounted on information panels. You can visit the Maison du Parc and return via a quiet road through the pretty village of Courtagnon.

A short family walk to explore the Sermiers Forest.

This hike begins in the Champagne hills and gradually descends into the heart of the Montagne de Reims forest via some very pleasant trails. The end of the route descends from the forest plateau to finish on the old CBR (Chemin de la Banlieue Rémoise) with a lovely view of the village of Verzenay and its hillsides.

Between vineyards and woods, with well-maintained paths, wild tracks, stony paths and rutted tracks, you’ll get a good taste of the hiking trails in Champagne and will even follow a section of the Camino de Santiago for a few hundred metres.

A short historical walk through the woods along the old CBR (Reims Suburban Railways) line and part of the Way of St James. After a good warm-up, you’ll encounter the walk’s only challenging section, which will take you up to the Montagne de Reims plateau, where the rest of the walk is then an easy stroll.

A series of successive steps – sometimes steep but short, separated by less steep sections – will take you to the summit plateau of this part of the Montagne de Reims. After crossing a mix of wide, stony paths and other wilder, sometimes damp sections, you’ll circle the Bois d’Écueil before reaching the paragliding area, then head back down to the starting village to complete your tour of the Chamery cirque.

Following the Marne-Aisne Canal, you leave the Champagne vineyards and the Reims mountains behind to arrive in Reims and its Notre-Dame Cathedral. As you cross Reims, there is a wealth of heritage to discover: the cathedral, of course, but also the Basilica of Saint Remi, Gallo-Roman ruins and engravings by Albrecht Dürer. You then leave this beautiful city behind and continue through vineyards and forests towards the Massif de Saint-Thierry, one of the four Champagne production areas.

In the heart of the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park, come and discover this walk that takes you across both sides of the Courtagnon valley, a small village in Champagne situated at the end of a dead-end road. A touch of mid-mountain atmosphere.

A short hike, mainly through the forest. Pleasant in summer but best avoided in heavy rain due to muddy patches. In some places, you leave the path entirely and it is essential to follow the trail. A GPS or the Visorando app is recommended for following the route due to numerous new paths as well as paths leading nowhere.

Located in the Verzy national forest, the Faux de Verzy are well worth a visit! The twisted beech trees and a hollow oak tree will capture your attention. During your hike, you will feel as if you have stepped into the Forest of Brocéliande.

This route leads through vineyards and woods to two of the region’s attractions: the Tour Brisset and the Faux de Verzy. Part of the route is easy as it is signposted, but another part is not, and requires the use of the Visorando app or a map. Without the detour via the Faux de Verzy, the walk is 15 km. Update May 2026: the paths at the end of the route, in the “La plaine d’Ambonnay” area, have been devastated by forestry machinery. They are barely passable, as they are full of water and ruts. You’ll need good shoes and the app to get through. There is a ‘No Entry’ sign at the finish point at the Tour Brisset.

This is a lovely walk in a little-known area, the Ardre Valley. The walk takes you over hills and through valleys, across Champagne vineyards, fields and forests. It starts at the beautiful Saint-Lié Chapel in Ville-Dommange.

This hike through woods and vineyards can be started from Champillon or Hautvillers. It passes by the pretty Château de la Malmaison and offers magnificent views of the Marne Valley.

This route is not strictly speaking a hike; it simply takes you to the monument, which is situated deep in the woods and very difficult to find. Use of the app is strongly recommended, as the stele is off the path and not very visible. This memorial is likely on private land. Please respect the site. This hike takes us through the vineyards to the picturesque village of Hautvillers, where many Champagne family homes can be found. The Abbey of Saint-Pierre d'Hautvillers houses the tomb of the monk Dom Pérignon, who is credited with inventing the Champagne method of winemaking. The Pierre Cheval Park, nestled on the side of a hillside, offers a magnificent view of the village of Hautvillers.

This is a lovely day hike starting from Hautvillers. It takes you through vineyards and woods on both sides of the Marne Valley, with splendid views. It's a great opportunity to discover this beautiful vineyard and visit a few wine cellars.
