Meet at Aliénor d'Aquitaine, setting off from Lignac

This pleasant walk takes you around the area near Lignac, as well as the beautiful castle and the picturesque village of Château Guillaume, which owes its name to William IX, father of Eleanor of Aquitaine, who built it in the late
12th century.

Description of the walk

Park on Rue de la Poste, by the FFRP hiking sign, opposite the village hall. The route is marked in blue (FFRP route) or yellow (route no. 33 proposed by the Parc de la Brenne).

(S/E) Walk around the war memorial square and head up Rue du Bosquet. Take Rue de la Brenne north-east at the next junction. You’ll reach the junction once you’ve passed the cemetery.

(1) Take the path on the left and follow it northwards to reach a T-junction at Les Brandes de Saint-Martin.

(2) Turn left onto this wide path, then a few steps further on take the path on the right. You’ll reach a new three-way junction.

(3) Turn left, cross a small road and continue straight ahead. You will reach the road leading to the hamlet of Lagecoué.

(4) Turn left away from the hamlet. You’ll reach the D53. Cross it and continue along the path opposite. You’ll arrive at the D118.

(5) Take the path opposite to reach an information panel; see below “During the walk or nearby”
Then retrace your steps and continue along the road westwards and then southwards, towards the village of Château Guillaume. You are now on theGRP®® de la Brenne.

(6) Pass a small lane on your left at the entrance to the village and continue along the road to the next junction: turn sharply left to enter the old village centre, towards Le Château. On leaving the village, continue along the path signposted south-east.
At the junction, by a cross, head down to the left to cross the Vavret.

(7) Continue straight on, leaving theGRP®® which climbs to the right: the small path takes you to a ford which you must cross to reach a pleasant little rest area and discover signpost no. 4.
Turn back and start the climb via theGRP®® now on your left.

(8) At the next fork, follow theGRP®® to the left, which descends to another fork: take the sunken path to the left again, cross a small stream and reach the D53.

(9) Take the road to the right, then at the crossroads, turn slightly left as you enter Lignac.
Shortly afterwards, turn right into the street, then left to reach the church. Go round the church on the left, cross the Place de la Poste and return to the starting point by going down Rue de la Poste. (S/E)

Worth a visit

(5) Before Château-Guillaume: at the information panel, enjoy a beautiful view of Château-Guillaume. The panel is numbered 5; it is the last on a short route exploring the castle’s history.
Return to the D118 and turn left to reach signpost no. 2 and admire another side of the castle from a bridge. To see signpost no. 1, head right towards the picnic area.

A lovely walk past the magnificent Château Guillaune; our only regret is that the route was too short.
Sorry, I haven’t quite figured out how to upload photos yet, but I’m not giving up.
Thank you for all these routes.

A lovely walk offering views of the magnificent castle where Eleanor of Aquitaine may well have been born. The tiny village of Château Guillaume takes us back in time. Beautiful paths and a varied route.
