Route in Brenne at Bélâbre: water, earth, air and fire

Bélâbre, situated in the Brenne Regional Nature Park in the Indre department, enjoyed a period of prosperity in the 19th century thanks to these four elements used in its tile works, potteries and forges. Earth for raw materials (clay and ore), water to wash and moisten them and to generate energy, air to dry the moulded clay, and fire for firing. This walk offers you the chance, amongst other things, to discover some remnants of this past.

Description of the walk

The route starts at the Tourist Office car park. It is marked in yellow.

(S/E) Head towards the village, then turn right to cross the Pont Vieux over the Anglin. Continue straight on south along Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, then turn left onto the RD53.

(1) Turn right then left towards the hamlet of l’Âge.

(2) Once past the hamlet, at the fork, follow the small road to the right then take the wide path to the left. Cross a ford then continue straight on towards the south-east, passing two paths, first on the right then on the left.

(3) At the crossroads where a dolmen stands, turn left to reach the hamlet of La Croux. Then turn left onto a path leading to the village of La Forge.

(4) At the next junction, turn right: the track becomes a street. After the bend, go down to the right then onto Place des Forgerons, and turn right again. You will arrive in a courtyard between two buildings; go down the steps leading to the RD53 and take it on the left.

(5) Once past the Forge mill and the remains of the blast furnace, part of the casting hall, the iron store and the charcoal shed, head up to the left then right through some old blacksmiths’ cottages. Continue straight on then turn right onto a small road leading to the hamlet of Le Magnoux. Once you have passed through it, take the small path on the left.

(6) At the junction with the cross, turn right. Another cross marks the junction with the RD53, which you follow to the left.

(7) After the cemetery, take a short detour to the right to explore the hamlet of Jovard and its 12th-century Romanesque chapel.
Then rejoin the RD53 to the right and head up a small road to the left.

(8) After the first cross, you’ll come to another: take the path on the right which leads back down to the RD53, which you follow to the left.

(1) Continue straight on, then turn right to cross the Pont Vieux and return to the starting point. (S/E)
