Description of the walk

(S) From the Combe refuge, take the forest road towards the bottom of the cirque. Pass the first hairpin bend. At the second, continue along the track carved into the rock until you reach a sign above the road. Continue along the track until you reach another bend, about 50 metres further on.

(1) At this bend, leave the track and take a slightly uphill, barely visible trail on the right, heading south-southwest. It becomes more visible and runs parallel to the track, overlooking it. It becomes less visible again, especially at the beginning of the season when the grass is high, but continue in the same direction and begin a descent into what looks like a stream bed, then continue off the clearly visible path towards the track that you can see again below. Join the track at the stream without crossing it.

(2) Continue downhill on the track. At the sign, leave it and pass between the two buildings of Le Planay, continuing in the same direction to reach the edge of the forest.

(3) Look for a large tree at the edge of the forest that has fallen, leaving a stump with a hollow that serves as a lodge for wildlife. Take the path that enters the forest on the right and passes at the foot of the stump. Reach the foot of the Dent des Portes.

(4) Please note: be sure to take the path that branches off to the left of the cairn and not the more visible path that leads to a stream but then disappears. Cross another stream and begin a long climb that will take you about 400 metres higher. The path is clearly visible, except in the upper part after passing some remains of a wooden fence, where you will need to head towards Mont Trélod, due south.

(5) Head right along a path that is not very visible, but visible enough to reach the Chalet du Chardonnet or Chalet des Gardes.

(6) At the sign located shortly after the chalet, climb to the right of the cattle trough and reach the ridge. Do not head towards Mont Trélod; instead, continue to a sign.

(7) Turn left, then immediately descend to the right. Pass under the Dent des Portes. You may see a few hikers descending on your right. Continue to a new crossroads (sign).

(8) Take the path on the right, following two large hairpin bends, to reach the Chalet du Golet.

(9) Continue downhill to reach a forest path.

(10) Take this path on the right, which is theGRP® Tour des Bauges marked in red and white. Continue on theGRP® until you reach the stream, then cross it using the small wooden bridge located just before the car park (E).

Notes

(1) It is possible to continue along the forest road, but it is not particularly interesting as it is relatively enclosed.

This hike requires good walking shoes with lugged soles, as parts of the route may be slippery depending on the weather conditions of the previous days. A pair of walking poles is recommended.
There are water points along the route:
- Outside, at the Combe refuge,
- Near the buildings at Planay,
- Below the Chardonnet chalet.

Worth a visit

On a clear day, you will not miss the peaks around you. From Mont Trélod to Mont Blanc via Pointe Sambuy, Pointe d'Arcalod, Pointe de Chaurionde, and Mont Pécloz, among others.

Be careful on the unmarked section... I preferred to follow the path even though it was longer.

There are no drinking water sources on this part of the hike. The only refuge had sheep and their guard dogs to welcome us, but no manager at the time.

Finally, the passage to the waterfall is a bit tricky but great fun!

This hike is both easy (no exposure, no technical sections) and challenging (16 km and 1,250 m elevation gain, and you can add on the Pointe de Banc Plat).
Beautiful valleys interspersed with picturesque ridges and lush green pastures. Peaceful landscapes and unobstructed views, you can really breathe... Conclusion: truly amazing!
