Tour of Montagne du Charbon, via Banc Plat and Dent des Portes

A beautiful, long circular loop around Montagne du Charbon. Starting from Petit Reposoir (Bellecombe-en-Bauges), climb to Col de Bornette then take the path carved into the cliff. At the Refuge de la Combe, climb to the Pointe de Banc-Plat for your first 360° viewpoint, descend to the Chalets du Rosay and Planay, then climb up the opposite side to the Charbonnet. Follow the ridge to climb the Dent des Portes, your second 360° viewpoint, before returning via the classic route through the Golet de Doucy.

Description of the walk

From Annecy or Lescheraines, take the Col de Leschaux road and turn off towards Bellecombe-en-Bauges. From the main town, take the Route de Mont Devant then the Route du Reposoir, ending at the Petit Reposoir car park.

(S/E) Continue on the road, which becomes a gravel road, to Le Reposoir.

(1) 50 m before the Reposoir sign, turn left onto a path that avoids the road. It climbs up like a canyon and ends at the foot of the road embankment, which you climb up on the right to Nubloz.
Continue to Col de Bornette, either by staying on the pastoral road or by taking a parallel path on the left.

(2) Continue straight on to Les Ailes du Stream, leaving the road to L'Écurie on your right.

(3) Turn right to climb a path that enters the forest and crosses the Bois du Petet, more or less level until you reach the junction with the path from Lathuile.

(4) Climb up to the right via hairpin bends that approach the cliff and cross a section carved into the rock to reach the Combe plateau. Cross it, heading south, and reach the Refuge de la Combe.

(5) From the refuge, continue south on flat ground and, when the pastoral road turns further on, climb left up a path to reach a pass at Les Platières (La Pessette sign).

(6) Leave the road on the right and climb the path up a grassy ridge that rises through the mountain pastures and then into a rocky section, leading to the summit of Pointe de Banc-Plat.

(7) Retrace your steps and, before reaching the road at La Pessette, turn right onto a path on the hillside that climbs a little before descending to join the road in the Rosay chalet area.
(It is also possible to follow the road, which is easier but tedious, from La Pessette to Le Rosay and Le Planay).

(8) Follow the road and, at the first left-hand bend, continue straight ahead on a marked path that descends to the Chalet du Planay, which you go around on the right.

(9) Once you have gone around the Planay area, continue on the path that heads south on level ground, crossing woods and streams before descending to ford the Ruisseau du Planet below the waterfalls.

(10) The path continues level for a short while on the right bank, then veers right for a long, winding climb through the forest, then through ravined mountain pasture areas, ending up near the Pas de l'Ours on a grassy plateau.
The trail veers southwest to cross this plateau and reach the Chalet des Gardes au Charbonnet.

(11) The path becomes busier. Follow it up to the right to reach the ridge.

(12) Leave the Sentier du Trélod, which descends opposite, and turn right to follow the ridge to the foot of the Dent des Portes, which can be climbed via a short steep section.

(13) Descend the Dent and turn right to go down to its foot and join the marked trail.

(14) Take this path on the right, which descends in a few hairpin bends to the junction marked "Sous la Dent des Portes".

(15) Leave the path to Doucy (les Cornes) and turn right towards Golet de Doucy: a wide bend takes you down to Chalet de Doucy, from where you descend on sight via a path to Golet (geographical pass).

(16) Head north towards Le Reposoir. A good path descends, first on the right bank, then on the left bank of a valley.

(1) From Le Reposoir, return to the car park by road, following the same route as on the way there (S/E).

Notes

There are no technical difficulties on this circular route, which climbs two peaks on the same ridge, with a descent of nearly 450 m between the two.

There are a few basins near the chalets and Refuge de la Combe that can be used for accommodation.

Most of the route is marked (except for the climbs to the two peaks): from the Col de Bornette, you are generally on theGRP®® of the Massif des Bauges and from the Golet de Doucy on theGR®® 96.

Worth a visit

The views up close include the various peaks of Bauges and Lake Annecy.

The more distant views extend to the Aravis, Mont Blanc, Beaufortain, Belledonne and Écrins, if conditions are good.

The climb to La Combe uses a passage carved into the cliff to open up the mountain pasture from Lathuile.

Part of the route enters the National Wildlife Reserve and even (in the Charbonnet sector) a study area where you must not leave the authorised paths.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

one of my most beautiful hikes in terms of landscape diversity (forest, trails, alpine pastures, ridges, flora). The stop at the Gîte de la Combe with horses and pigs roaming free and the opportunity to buy some Tomme des Bauges cheese made for a pleasant break.

The round trip to the Pointe de Blanc Plat is highly recommended.
The hike is demanding, especially after the long descent and then the 500m climb after lunch. It's tough going and seems long on the zigzagging paths, but they are shaded.
In short, a superb adventure.

A very beautiful hike with stunning scenery and some nice climbs (the one carved into the cliff before the Combe refuge). We extended the route to climb Mont Trélod, but it was definitely worth it (the fourth highest peak in the Bauges, at over 2,180 metres) with views of the entire massif and much further afield. We received a very warm welcome at the Combe refuge.

I did this beautiful hike with a friend at the beginning of July over two days, sleeping at the Combe refuge. This refuge is as charming as ever and the warden is very friendly!
We went to the Banc Plat peak on the first day and the next day we followed the trail that leads to the Rosay and Planay chalets, as I couldn't find a path to avoid the trail, but I didn't look too hard either!
The climb up to Dent des Portes can be tricky for people who are prone to vertigo.
We were able to admire lots of flowers, including purple gentians, Martagon lilies and a few Edelweiss at the summit of Dent des Portes.
I highly recommend this hike. I was already familiar with this route and always enjoy returning to it.

I am familiar with Yves Ray's books on Bugey, but not the one on Bauges. It would be surprising if the description had been 'copied'!
There are trails everywhere and therefore multiple descriptions... In this case, I had found descriptions for the Pointe de Banc-Plat on the one hand, and the Dent des Portes on the other. They were combined after studying the maps and realising that crossing the ridges was beyond the scope of a "normal" hike.
So it's neither plagiarism nor laziness.
Just so you know.
