Park in the centre of the hamlet of Mont Devant.
(S/E) Head south-east along the road and leave it shortly afterwards, near a stopover lodge.
(1) Continue straight ahead, following theGRP ®.
This first climb will lead you to the road at a place called Sanguinaire
(2) Continue right, climbing up to Le Reposoir, where there is also a car park. Ignore the narrow path that climbs directly to Col de Bornette, opting instead for a wide, newly constructed track.
(3) Head into the mountain pasture, then rejoin theGRP® before the Noubloz chalets. After the chalets, follow the track for a while longer, then leave it to stay on theGRP® and reach the Col de Bornette. Note: it is possible to stay on the stony track.
(4) At the pass, you will find the famous track again. Take it once more to reach the Chalets du Mollard, passing close to a cross.
Pass the Chalets du Mollard and follow a zigzag path uphill to reach the Crêt du Char plateau. The plateau forms a sort of small pass between the Crêt du Char (1,468 m) to the south and the Roc de Four Magnin (1,645 m) to the north.
(5) There is no sign pointing to Roc de Four Magnin, so head north (trail marks) to reach the base of the peak.
Look for the yellow markings that mark the rocky path, which is a little steep and sometimes exposed. By carefully following the yellow markings, you will first reach the secondary summit. Continue along the ridge to reach the aluminium cross at an altitude of 1,645m
Panorama: Roc des Bœufs to the west, Montagne du Charbon to the east, Lake Annecy, La Tournette, Le Colombier d'Aillon and many more.
(6) Descend, carefully following the yellow markings.
When you reach the meadow, head west to find the path that leads to Précheret before entering the woods. It is marked by a sign.
Descend into the woods to reach the mountain pasture where the trail ends below the Précheret chalets.
(7) A possible extension is to make a round trip to the Col de la Frasse. There are sections of wooden flooring on this path.
(8) Return to Précheret and take theGR®96trail to Mont Derrière. Stay on theGR® rather than crossing the mountain pasture to reach Mont Devant directly.
Staying on theGR® gives you the opportunity to cross the pretty hamlet of Mont Derrière.
(9) Take the road back to the car park at Mont Devant (S/E).
A very beautiful hike with no difficulty in finding your way, but very muddy in places. We didn't climb to the Col des Glaciers or the summit of La Frasse as my wife doesn't like difficult sections and is afraid of heights. We'll do it again, but I'll climb to the summit of the Col de la Frasse on my own.
