Description of the walk

Park in the centre of the hamlet of Mont Devant.

(S/E) Head south-east along the road and leave it shortly afterwards, near a stopover lodge.

(1) Continue straight ahead, following theGRP ®.
This first climb will lead you to the road at a place called Sanguinaire

(2) Continue right, climbing up to Le Reposoir, where there is also a car park. Ignore the narrow path that climbs directly to Col de Bornette, opting instead for a wide, newly constructed track.

(3) Head into the mountain pasture, then rejoin theGRP® before the Noubloz chalets. After the chalets, follow the track for a while longer, then leave it to stay on theGRP® and reach the Col de Bornette. Note: it is possible to stay on the stony track.

(4) At the pass, you will find the famous track again. Take it once more to reach the Chalets du Mollard, passing close to a cross.
Pass the Chalets du Mollard and follow a zigzag path uphill to reach the Crêt du Char plateau. The plateau forms a sort of small pass between the Crêt du Char (1,468 m) to the south and the Roc de Four Magnin (1,645 m) to the north.

(5) There is no sign pointing to Roc de Four Magnin, so head north (trail marks) to reach the base of the peak.
Look for the yellow markings that mark the rocky path, which is a little steep and sometimes exposed. By carefully following the yellow markings, you will first reach the secondary summit. Continue along the ridge to reach the aluminium cross at an altitude of 1,645m
Panorama: Roc des Bœufs to the west, Montagne du Charbon to the east, Lake Annecy, La Tournette, Le Colombier d'Aillon and many more.

(6) Descend, carefully following the yellow markings.
When you reach the meadow, head west to find the path that leads to Précheret before entering the woods. It is marked by a sign.
Descend into the woods to reach the mountain pasture where the trail ends below the Précheret chalets.

(7) A possible extension is to make a round trip to the Col de la Frasse. There are sections of wooden flooring on this path.

(8) Return to Précheret and take theGR®96trail to Mont Derrière. Stay on theGR® rather than crossing the mountain pasture to reach Mont Devant directly.
Staying on theGR® gives you the opportunity to cross the pretty hamlet of Mont Derrière.

(9) Take the road back to the car park at Mont Devant (S/E).

A very pleasant hike, not too much in the woods, with a magnificent view from the peak of Four de Magnin. Not difficult

beautiful view of Lake Annecy glimpsed between two clouds. However, with the almost daily rain at the moment, the paths are extremely muddy...
There weren't many people at the start at around 8:00 a.m. However, the car park was full when we returned.

A beautiful, easy hike surrounded by nature: flower-filled mountain pastures, stunning mountains: Roc des Boeufs... We didn't make the round trip to Roc du Four Magnin, but we did go to Col de La Grasse (relaxing)

A very beautiful hike with no difficulty in finding your way, but very muddy in places. We didn't climb to the Col des Glaciers or the summit of La Frasse as my wife doesn't like difficult sections and is afraid of heights. We'll do it again, but I'll climb to the summit of the Col de la Frasse on my own.

Thank you for this lovely hike with its varied views. The route is excellent, as is the description.
The photo showing the path up to Roc de Four Magnin is very useful, as the path is barely visible at the start.
Don't miss the return trip to the Col de la Frasse, which is well worth the detour to this peaceful mountain pasture. Curiously, it is marked on the trail but not described.
Happy hiking!

Having climbed Le Roc MAGNIN a number of times and living locally, I would like to suggest two notable improvements to this route.

Solution 1
Like all the locals, I recommend doing this circuit clockwise to avoid the slippery and sometimes dangerous descent on the Col de la Frasse and then on the rocks of Mont Derrière, especially for hikers who are not very fit or have poor footwear. (Climbing on a slippery path or wet rocks is not as dangerous as descending) I have seen too many people complain about the Char trail (removed from IGN maps) because of this descent on La Frasse. Conclusion: park at the Mont Derrière car park and follow the signs for Roc des Bœufs/Col de la Frasse then "Le Char" etc., the opposite of the description

Solution 2
The most beautiful, my favourite and the one for connoisseurs, which avoids the uninteresting parts of the other solutions: Park at the new Petit Reposoir car park (starting point for all walks in this area), head towards Le Reposoir and, just before crossing the stream, take the forest track on the left and climb up Crêt du Char to "Four Magnin". with a bit of luck, you may encounter some chamois on the way back. Descend to the Col de Bornette and then Le Reposoir. For those who enjoy beautiful walks in the mountain pastures, from Bornette, continue on to "Les écuries" and "Golet de Doucy" and descend to Le Reposoir

a pleasant hike as you pass through varied landscapes
the section towards Roc Magnin is quite challenging: it is quite steep towards the end and there are lots of trees across the path, so I decided to turn back.

i highly recommend the round trip to Col de la Fasse

this hike is perfectly marked:

A beautiful day and an easy route. The section towards Roc de Four Magnin is a little more challenging for some people over the age of 80. You just need to take your time on the descent. We met some pupils from a secondary school in Grezy-sur-Aix who were on a discovery day (thank you to the teachers for these initiatives), which proves that this is an accessible route.

A lovely short hike in a stunning setting with magnificent flora at this time of year.
For point 2, I preferred the narrow path through the woods (a matter of taste) to the stony track.
In the rocky section, it's a good thing there are yellow markings, which I looked for several times, because the route isn't obvious and can be dangerous if you stray from it.
On the way back from the summit, at exactly 1,465 metres, I took a trail heading due west which led me directly to the entrance to the woods (sign) for the return to Précheret.
I recommend the Col de la Frasse round trip (80 m additional elevation gain), if only for the south-facing landscape on the way back.
I agree with the previous comment about the direction of the route, but in that case, would I have done the Col de la Frasse round trip?
One last detail: the hike is advertised as having a maximum altitude of 1,609 metres and an elevation gain of 734 metres.
Minor corrections: maximum altitude 1,645 m (confirmed in the description) and elevation gain +775 m, but I won't quibble over a few metres.

a pleasant walk. In rainy weather or when there is snow on the ground, as was the case for me, it is advisable, as already mentioned in previous comments, to do the walk in the opposite direction. This way, the descents are less steep and less slippery, either because of the snow or leaves, but also because of the stones and steep slopes on the side of certain sections of the path. i didn't take any unnecessary risks, but with a little experience, my walking sticks (essential) and caution, these difficulties posed no problem. It's not very dangerous, but you have to be careful, as you always should in the mountains.

Excellent in good weather. It would be a good idea to indicate the glacier trail that leads there, as an alternative route for the return journey. Local hikers pointed it out to me. It is clearly visible from the Croix du Sommet. Hike completed on Sunday 24 August. Slightly warmer weather would be preferable. The climb from the flat plateau of the CRET du Char to the summit is quite steep, but it is feasible for any reasonably fit hiker.

the view of Mont Blanc, the Aravis mountains, Lake Annecy... is worth the trip.
the route remains a little tricky towards the end, but you can enjoy the view without going all the way to the cross.
i think it's possible to descend directly to the Col de la Frasse, but I didn't dare to try it
