A walk with Célestine in Chassignolles

Park near Chassignolles Town Hall.
Signposting: Blue.
(S/E) Turn left onto Rue Le Bourg, then continue straight on to the right onto Rue du Mareuil. You’ll reach the picnic area.

(1) Turn left at a 90° angle to quickly reach the hamlet of Les Beaudoins. Turn right onto Rue de la Forge and head towards the water tower.

(2) Turn left again at a 90° angle to discover a botanical trail created in 1997. At the junction with Route du But, turn left onto it, pass through the hamlet of But and reach the Porteau barns.

(3) Carry on straight ahead. At the next junction, turn left, then cross the D41. Continue along the path through the forest until you reach Rue des Béjauds in the hamlet of the same name.

(4) Turn left onto it, reach the D41, then turn right onto it to return to the starting car park (S/E).

A easy route for the whole family

The ‘granges à porteau’: these have existed in the Boischaut region since the mid-19th century. The ‘porteau’ is a projecting canopy with a standard dimensions of 4.5m by 3.5m. It was originally a functional space used as a shelter for all kinds of agricultural activities.

Whether on a self-guided or guided tour, the museum team provides the insights needed to understand this living memorial to the history of peasant life and the countryside in the Vallée Noire from 1850 to 1950 – a region so dear to George Sand.
Over 1,000 m² of exhibition space allow visitors to discover the work and daily life of farmers through the workshops of the hat-maker, the cooper, the blacksmith and the clog-maker. An authentic 1950s farmhouse also awaits visitors, offering a journey into the heart of rural life.
The museum’s bookshop and gift shop is brimming with books and other items that will delight young and old alike.
