The starting point is located at the car park of the Montgivray village hall, behind the church and the castle grounds (town hall).
Blue markings
(S/E) Head west along Allée Clésinger, which runs alongside the campsite, crosses a small bridge and leads to the water treatment plant. Pass under the bridge of the disused Châteauroux/Montluçon railway line, then follow the D49 road on the left for 300 metres.
(1) Turn right onto a path towards Les Conges. After a short steep hill, you will arrive at an old winegrower's shelter. On your right, you will see the large fields of the Urmont plateau. On your left, in the distance, you will see La Châtre.
Blue markings supplemented by white and red markings for theGR®46
(2) Take the grassy path on the right that crosses the plateau. On your left, you will see the Chavigner-Pouzelas water tower and, on your right, Mongivray. Then follow the small road on the left.
(3) After a right-hand bend, leave the road and take the carriage road north for 300 metres.
White and red markings for theGR®46.
(4) Leave the grassy path on your right leading down to Urmont with blue markings and continue straight ahead on theGR®46(you will then be walking in the opposite direction to a yellow-marked route). When you reach a small road, continue left to Preugnarnault.
(5) At the crossroads, turn right and cross several farm buildings.
(6) At the junction of theGR®46andGR®654paths, turn right to follow theGR®654towards Montgivray. You will then cross several pastures. The path then turns right (the path on the left and opposite are closed). You will reach a pond where you may see nutria swimming. At the next crossroads, continue straight on towards the first houses of the hamlet of Laloeuf. Cross the D49 road carefully to reach a final residence, a former 15th-century fortified house with a beautiful gate featuring a door for pedestrians and another for carters. Then continue down theGR® to the next crossroads.
(7) Go straight ahead, following the newGR® markings (and not to the right as currently indicated on the map), then turn right at the intersection. After a left-hand bend, you will pass under the old railway line again: turn right onto the shaded path.
After 400 metres, you will reach the Fontaine de Vieilleville, topped by a vaulted archway that precedes an old wash house.
Blue markings supplemented by white and red markings.
(8) Cross the small road. Further on, follow the Indre river on your left, arriving at the old Moulin Biard mill and then another wash house.
At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead, leaving the path on the right which passes under a railway bridge and leads to the hamlet of Urmont.
(9) Leave the wide path and cross the footbridge over the Indre river on your left. You will reach a second footbridge from where you can see the Moulin de Fontpisse mill. The path runs alongside the Indre river, then winds its way through the various buildings of the old mill to emerge at the front façade and a wide path which you follow to the Montgivray cemetery.
In front of the cemetery, turn right to go to the centre of the village.
(10) Then turn right towards the church, walk along it and turn left in front of its entrance gate. Turn slightly left into the grounds of the former Château de Montgivray, now the town hall. Walk to the courtyard where you can see the majestic entrance porch, then walk along the castle via the path between its left wing and the primary school. You are now in front of the castle's façade. Continue along the park's main path towards the road bridge.
(11) Then head south-west towards a small wall overlooking the Indre river, follow the adjoining path that goes around the park and takes you back to the car park of the village hall (S/E).
