Prat de Bouc–Lavessière

Stage 7 of our Tour du Cantal. This is the final stage of the Tour du Cantal, with another change to the GR®400 route: instead of returning to Murat, we head back to Laveissière (where we left our vehicle, see episode 1). Most of this stage is in the shade, but the descent brings the heat..

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour du Cantal

Description of the walk

(S) From the centre of Prat de Bouc, take the D39 down towards Albepierre for a short distance (500 m).

(1) The GR® trail turns left into the woods towards the Col de la Molède. Cross the Lagnon via a magnificent wooden footbridge.

(2) Pass near the Lagnon waterfall (detour). This forest path is very pleasant, with plenty of shade and many different species of trees.

(3) Be careful at this point: a poorly positioned sign indicates a change of direction for the Col de la Molède: to the left! However, you must stay on the main track towards Raveyrol.

(4) Be careful at this point: the sign is upside down in relation to the direction of travel. Do not turn right! Continue straight ahead.

(5) From here, the bucolic forest track turns into a poorly paved track with lots of potholes until you reach the Col de la Molède. Not so nice!

(6)Take advantage of the location to take a break (tables). This is also where the route leaves the GR®. Continue on the PR® towards Laveissieres.

(7) Follow the left-hand path and the PR® signs. From here, the trail crosses the Murat National Forest, which is criss-crossed by very high fences. "It's a bit daunting walking between these fences!" (Not sure what they're for? Protection of certain areas?)
At the end of this long stretch, the route joins a forest track.

(8) This comes in from the right and has somewhat disrupted the landscape and the signposts (due to the passage of machinery). Continue straight ahead to quickly reach (200 m) the paved road.

(9) Follow it to the left towards the hamlet of La Bastide.

(10) Take the road on the right (signposted La Bastide), continue for 200 m and cross the bridge.

(11) Immediately after, leave the road and take a path climbing up to the right, follow it until you rejoin the tarmac road in a bend above the hamlet of Grand Champ. Continue to the right, climbing up to the fountain and picnic area at La Bastide (water not suitable for drinking).

(12) Continue along the road until you leave the hamlet, then find a path that descends into the shade of the woods.

(13) Follow it to the right until you reach the crossroads at an altitude of 1055 metres.

(14) Turn right downhill, then change direction again 100 m further on, turning left onto a very narrow, steep path (signpost).
Caution: the crossroads is a little confusing due to forestry vehicles! The path leads to the railway line.

(15) Cross without using the crossing (caution: be vigilant): two gates provide access to the crossing. A new forest track leads to the hamlet of Le Chambon.

(16) Turn right onto the road and continue for 200 m to reach the N122, which you cross via an underpass on the right. Continue along the small road towards the campsite.

(17) The path branches off to the left before the Alagnon, following the riverbank. This keeps you in the shade and cool! This section takes you back down to the village of Laveissière.

(18) Go back up the road (wooden footbridge over a wetland), turn right onto the bridge over the Alagnon and head back up towards the centre of the village and the church (E).
