Plomb du Cantal and its ridge via the Prés Marty

Hike on one of the must-see sites in Cantal, preferably outside the tourist season, when the Lioran chairlifts are not in operation. After the tranquillity of the summer pastures on the Prés Marty, the Plomb du Cantal reveals superb landscapes. A return trip along the ridge to the Chapelle du Cantal allows you to make the most of these heights.

Description of the walk

Park in one of the car parks in Prat de Bouc.
Please note that the first part of this hike, on the Prés Marty, is not marked, and the paths are not always clear: Visorando app useful

(S/E) Take the markedGR®® trail that heads towards Le Plomb, due west.

(1) At the stream, leave theGR®®(400-465) trail discreetly to the left and continue to follow the path that veers to the right. Be careful! About a hundred metres further on, leave this stony path and follow a discreet path on the right, which is much less clearly marked in the grass and runs first along a fence on the right, then a fence on the left. Further on, the path begins to descend.

(2) The path makes a sharp left turn towards a small rock face. At a sign indicating "Col de Prat de Bouc" (in the opposite direction), ignore the path on the left and the one that continues straight ahead, turn right and pass to the right of the cliff. Shortly afterwards, the path turns right and begins to skirt around a summer pasture below the Rochers de Chamalière. Go around the pasture, crossing a few fences through gaps and approaching the Rochers de Chamalière.

(3) At a sign indicating "Col de Prat de Bouc" (in the opposite direction), turn left onto a grassy path to pass to the left of the cliff. When you reach a "PR®®" sign, cross a footbridge. The path then disappears a little on the grass: follow the wooden posts that indicate the direction from time to time.

(4) Cross a stream and then walk along a fence on your right. At another sign for "Col de Prat de Bouc" (in the opposite direction), turn left. At a post (which had fallen down when we passed), follow a path that goes around a rocky hill on your right. At another post, follow a fence on your left.

(5) At a "PR®®" sign in the opposite direction, turn onto a grassy path on the right to finish going around the rocky hill. Follow another post and then join a stony path.

(6) Follow it to the right until you find yourself below Le Plomb, at the chairlift stations.

(7) Climb the wooden steps to the orientation tables. Turn south to locate the ridge path that the rest of this hike follows back and forth. Descend a few steps and take a rocky path on the right that descends from the summit on the south side to join the ridge path markedGR®® in red and white, at a barrier.

(8) Continue straight ahead slightly below the ridge. Further on, pass through a barrier. During the summer grazing season, these heights are occupied by cows, calves and bulls... and dogs must be kept on a leash. The path often rejoins the ridge, passing through the Col de Pourtoube and offering beautiful views.

(9) Leave the Puy de la Cède on your left.

(10) Pass through the Col de la Chèvre. Arrive below the Puy Gros. On the left, further down, note the ruins of the Chapelle du Cantal.

(11) Return via the same route to the foot of Le Plomb, at the barrier.

(8) Continue on theGR®®400-465, which descends to the right, towards the west. The markings are not always very clear, but you just need to go straight down or make short detours when the terrain is too rough, along a very rugged path.

(1) At the bottom, at the stream, go through a barrier and return to Prat de Bouc (S/E) via the same path as on the way up.

Notes

There are herds of livestock along the entire route, but relatively few hikers as the Lioran chairlifts are no longer in operation. It is best to avoid this area during the peak summer and winter sports seasons.

During the summer grazing season, it is essential to keep your dog on a leash.

On the Prés Marty, the paths are not always clearly marked. Refer to the description and map. The Visorando app may be useful.

Difficulty: "Moderate to difficult" for the following reasons: take care to follow the route on the Prés Marty; the route is quite long, but it is easy to shorten it on the return leg; on the way back, the path is very rutted and a little difficult over time.

Worth a visit

Some photos here

Although the landscapes on the Plomb and the ridge are superb, those who prefer peace and quiet may prefer the first part of this circular route, on the Prés Marty. From these pastures, where small streams flow and beautiful rock faces rise up, the resort's infrastructure is almost invisible.

The Chapelle du Cantal, the destination of the round trip on the ridge, is a ruined chapel which, on its own, is not worth the long detour... but we had to find a reason for this round trip on the ridge... in addition to the magnificent landscapes, of course.

We found the climb easy, with wide tracks and beautiful views throughout, but what a 360° panorama from the top of Plomb Cantal – magnificent.

Thank you for this beautiful hike with varied landscapes. We started from the Prat de Bouc pass via the GR trail to join the route, extending the hike by 5 km with an additional 200 metres of elevation gain.

I set off very early... no encounters until the summit... the view is superb, 360 degrees. I headed to Puy Brunet 😍 via the ridges (GR) then back to Plomb du Cantal and down via the PR (yellow markings), summer pasture path via Marty meadow, stony path and approximate markings.encountered herds of cows🐮 (dogs strongly discouraged). Arrived at Col de Prat de Bouc with only one desire... to do it again 😍

Hike done in May with the Prés de Marty filled with daffodils, magnificent! Route completed in reverse without any particular problems. Numerous mouflons observed on both sides of the Col de la Chèvre. Total of 20 km and 843 m elevation gain completed in 6 hours of walking.

A very beautiful hike, but the descent from the father's tomb is long, very long... On the other hand, the view from the top of the ski resort is breathtaking, and I find the directions on the route clear. In fact, the hike took 3 hours and 40 minutes, which is a long way from the 7 hours stated on the description sheet. The average speed was 3.3 km/h, and it was very pleasant at 13 degrees, but do take an extra layer with you to wear over your T-shirt, as it's quite breezy up there.

The markings in the Martys meadows are very rough, and we strayed off the trail for 20 minutes. Fortunately, the vegetation is low and you can see far ahead to find your way back.
But the strangest problem remains the indicated duration of 7 hours and 45 minutes. In reality, it takes 5 hours.

We completed the circular route via the Marty meadows. There are virtually no markings in this area, but with a compass and map it is fairly easy to find your way. We continued along the ridges to the right of the pass, following the GR trail, which was magnificent, before descending and heading towards Lake Garde. We then climbed back up the large hairpin bends leading to the cable car arrival point and then Plomb du Cantal, descending via Tombe du Père to the pass, our starting point.
A superb 17 km hike with 900 m of elevation gain. At this time of year, there was hardly anyone around. The autumn colours were sublime. Albine

The description of the start of the route (from the car park to the Party meadows and then on to the pass) is correct, but it is difficult to find your way around given the uniformity of the terrain and the lack of landmarks. The easiest way is to use your sense of direction, referring to the IGN map, then join the main path to climb up to the pass. The same applies to the rest of the route we chose (which I have described briefly) and which seems much more interesting than going back and forth along the Crêtes du Plomb. Albine

Why is the description disappointing, and how can the layout be improved?
