Pounche des Escaouprés and Col de l'Amandier

This is a hike that climbs quite steeply on a tarmac road right at the start, then continues to climb quite steeply for a few kilometres. You then descend gently, with a few sections over rock that are a bit tricky, but not too much. The route takes you across pleasant plateaus with unobstructed views of the Vallon des Amandiers and Sainte-Baume, with Marseille in the background.

Description of the walk

Start at the Claous car park.

(S/E) At the far end of the car park, on the right, look for a tarmac road which you should follow uphill. This is the Chemin du Garlaban. You will soon reach a junction.

(1) Turn right and you’ll soon reach another junction. Follow the yellow-marked path to the left. You’ll then come across a path branching off to the left and a forest gate.

(2) Leave the road. Go through the gate and follow the GB 101. It offers some lovely, unobstructed views and crosses a path leading off to the left. Continue along the path leading off to the right and you’ll reach a junction. Leave the path and take the path leading off to the right uphill. Pass close to an electricity pylon marked with sky-blue markings.

(3) At the Fork in the road on the right towards Grande Tête Rouge (closed due to a rockslide), continue straight on, staying on the DFCI track. Leave the DFCI track in the middle of the bend heading right, taking a path that heads left uphill. Follow this path. Marked in yellow and sky blue, you will soon cross a path leading off to the right: keep to the left onto a plateau with a very clear view of the mountain ranges.

(4) You will cross a path on the right with a sign and the warning "danger, risk of falling rocks, prohibited". Stay on the path opposite and arrive at a large clearing with a large cairn. Further on, the path splits in two. Take the left-hand path, following the yellow markings. The path splits again into two: take the left-hand path once more. There are some short sections where you need to descend over the rock. Caution: there are many paths; follow the yellow markings, which lead you to continue to the left. Keep following them, heading left as you descend (a slightly dry section). Follow the yellow markings carefully; they can be a bit hard to see at times but are definitely there. Pass a small stone kerb; follow it straight ahead but do not step over it. The yellow markings reappear at a small rocky section where you must descend a drop of about fifty centimetres. The descent is a little tricky. You’ll reach a signpost; continue straight on towards Taoumé (passing the signpost on your left). There’s a fairly wide path you need to take. It’s an old green trail that leads to an area with plantations. On your left, you’ll spot a DFCI track; join it.

(5) At the waterhole, take the path on the right along the Chemin d'Allauch to Garlaban. Join the yellow route again, then leave the DFCI track for a path branching off to the left, with a few stones on the ground to clearly mark the way. It is a rather narrow single track with grass brushing lightly against your legs.

(6) At the junction, head right then immediately turn left onto a path that descends, passing another junction not shown on the map. Continue straight on towards the Col de l'Amandier.

(7) Cross the DFCI track, slightly to the right. The path on the left is very narrow. Take this path, then look out for the Amandier well on the right. Make a short detour to take a few photos, then resume the descent and continue along the path.

(8) At the junction, continue to the left. Shortly afterwards, take the path that branches off to the right in a U-shape. Continue along this ascending path until you reach the Y-junction.

(9) Leave the path on your left and continue straight on, heading downhill. Pass a small junction that does not appear on maps. You will see a house on the left with beehives; walk past it to reach a dirt track leading to the house.

(10) Take this track on the left to reach a green gate: continue straight on; the track ends in front of a private property, but just before that, there is a path branching off to the right

(11) Take this path to the right. Follow the path until you come to a house with a path on the left that you must follow. This is the Chemin du Garlaban, which you should follow until you reach the junction of the circular route.

(1) Turn right towards the car park, following the route back in the opposite direction to the way out (S/E).
