From the Source du Chien to the Pic du Taoumé

An original route starting from Allauch towards the Pic du Taoumé, passing through the Pas de Menoun and the Source du Chien, then heading up the Vallon des Escaouprés amidst the water-filled limestone potholes. En route, take a detour to the Grotte de l’Étoile where, after heavy storms, you can see water gushing from its channel, then on the return journey, through old bauxite mining galleries. The whole route is crowned by sumptuous landscapes. (see the nearby section)

Description of the walk

Park in the car park after the Allauch riding centre.

(S/E) Head up the Chemin du Garlaban then continue along the DFCI track, keeping in the same direction. Keep left at the Duché houses then left again after the cistern to reach the junction of the Col de Cante-Perdrix tracks.

(1) Turn right towards Grande Tête Rouge (sign on a rock). At the signpost, keep left towards Le Taoumé. At the next signpost, turn right towards Pas dei Menoun, following the blue markings.

(2) At Pas dei Menoun, before starting the descent to the left, climb up a large rocky step on the right and follow it along to discover, a few metres further on, some engravings made by ancient shepherds. These engravings are no longer very visible; you have to look carefully for them. Turn back and rejoin the blue-marked trail.

(3) After a cairn, head down to the right towards the Grotte de l’Étoile and visit it. Turn back and rejoin the path which leads further down to the Source du Chien (signpost). Rock carvings are visible on the left a few metres above the spring and behind a pine tree.

(4) At the signpost, keep left to head up the Vallon des Escaouprés amidst water-filled potholes and streams. Further on, join a path.

(5) Leave the path and keep to the right as you continue up the valley.

(6) Turn right at a cairn, heading east then south-east as you climb through the vegetation. Cross a few rocky outcrops and arrive near the Grotte du Grosibou and a signpost. Visit the cave, turn back, then turn right to climb the Pic du Taoumé. On the other side, descend through a rocky gap and rejoin the path.

(7) Turn left onto the path, then keep to the right to follow it, heading north-east.

(8) Turn right, then rejoin the wide DFCI track further down. Turn left and stay on the track, which curves sharply to the left and heads west-south-west. Ignore the various paths on either side.

(9) Leave the track and turn right onto the path that descends towards the old bauxite mining sites.

(10) From this point, on the left, there are four caves closed off by gates. Another cave is further on to the left in the bushes. Continue along the path, keeping straight on, until you reach a large clearing with red earth. On the right, a cave closed off by gates.

(11) Keep to the left. The red trail then joins a tarmac road and some houses. Follow this road and, at the junction, turn right onto Chemin du Garlaban to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Best done after rainy spells to admire the spectacle of the water.

For reference: the author’s estimated time for this route is 3 hours 30 minutes (excluding a lunch break).

Worth a visit

The Grotte du Berger and its engravings, located above the Grotte de l’Étoile.
Baume Sourne and, further on, the Puits du Mûrier.

Best done after heavy rain to enjoy the beauty of the landscape:
- You can descend from the Grotte de l’Étoile via a path that follows the course of its stream. This takes you to the foot of a beautiful waterfall. Cross it to reach the Source du Chien.
- Detour to Font Berguette. Please note that the path, which is sometimes slippery and overgrown, should be taken at the level of the stream bed.

Please note: the signposts are no longer there and the path leading to the bauxite site could not be found
The description of the return route via the DFCI isn’t detailed enough (not great)
On the other hand, a very lovely hike, with beautiful scenery and views.

Hello, we set off on this walk at 11.00 am; it was a Sunday in Allauch and there were very few people around.
This walk is superb in spring! The views, the colours, the smells. We really enjoyed it!!
However!!!!!! PLEASE NOTE
Once you reach point 9!! It’s very, very difficult to find the path leading to the caves...
YOU MUST, on this MAIN path, go to the right where there is a small recess... the path is there! Barely visible.
On this main path, just before the small recess, the owners of the house below have put up a WHITE rope; if you get there, it’s too late! The recess is just before that.
The caves are blocked by large bars; we didn’t find the one that was open. This detour isn’t particularly interesting in the end, but it’s quite pleasant.

This hike offers some beautiful views and a pleasant variety
We loved it despite a few difficulties in finding some of the paths... Thanks to the organiser.
