Departure from Pas de Morgins, the border pass between France and Switzerland. Park on the Swiss side, about 150m after the pass when coming from France, opposite Lac de Morgins. There are two parking areas on the left-hand side of the road (when coming from France), on either side of a "Bienvenue" sign.
See an alternative starting point in the practical information section.
There are directional signs at major intersections.
(S/E) Take the Route des Têtes, on the car park side, towards Le Corbeau. Climb steadily up this small tarmac road, which is closed to traffic except for authorised vehicles.
(1) Pass under a chairlift line, ignore a turn-off on the right, make a hairpin turn to the left and climb the winding road between the chalets. Pass under the chairlift line a second time and you will immediately come to an intersection.
(2) Then turn right onto a stony path and pass under the chairlift line one last time. At a fork that appears quickly, turn left and enter a meadow with abundant vegetation. The path soon gives way to a steep, winding trail that leads to the foot of a chalet.
(3) Leave the meadow and turn right. Pass a second chalet on your right and continue along a wide, shaded path.
(4) At the crossroads, take the second path on the left (hiking sign and yellow diamond on the trunk of a spruce tree). Walk along the edge of the forest and then through an alpine pasture. Pass at the foot of a cross and descend slightly. Pass under two ski lift lines and join a paved alpine track.
(5) Follow the track to the left towards Les Portes du Culet and take a sharp right turn.
(6) Before a left-hand bend, leave the track and take a path on the left towards Portes du Culet. Cross a path leading to a chalet and continue along the mountain pasture path. Pass at the foot of an electricity pylon and continue northwards on fairly flat ground. Then climb towards the clearly visible pass.
(7) Cross the tarmac track and take the path that passes at the foot of the fenced calvary towards Pointe de Bellevue. Climb the ridge, which is steep and lined with spruce trees at first, then gentler and more open.
(8) Pass a promontory (picnic table) and continue along the ridge overlooking the wild Combe de Dreveneuse (watch out for the cliffs on the left). This will take you to the summit (orientation table, cross).
(9) Take the path that branches off to the right (south-east) at the foot of the cross. Descend via steep switchbacks.
(10) At a fork (signpost), turn right towards Culet-Alpage and Morgins. Cross a stile and continue along a track through an alpine pasture, heading towards an electricity pylon. Cross a second stile.
(11) On a flat section well before the pylon, find a mountain pasture path and follow it to the right (west). Then descend in a north-westerly direction. Go around the Culet mountain pasture chalets on the right and come out onto a tarmac track.
(12) Follow the track downhill to the left (the sign indicating the direction of Les Écottis and Morgins is incorrectly oriented, pointing in the opposite direction to the actual route; situation as of August 2018). At the next intersection (elevation 1697), take a sharp right turn (do not follow the direction of Morgins via Chanso). Cross a stream and climb back up. Ignore a gravel path on the right and return to the crossroads you took on the way up.
(6) From this point, the return journey follows the same route as the outward journey, in the opposite direction. Continue along the tarmac track.
(5) Very soon after a hairpin bend to the left, leave the tarmac track and turn right onto the path towards Les Têtes.
(4) At the crossroads, cross the gravel path and follow the direction indicated by the hiking sign opposite.
(3) At the chalet, turn left towards Morgins and descend steeply into the meadow.
(2) After passing under the chairlift line, turn left onto the tarmac track and descend the winding Route des Têtes.
(1) Continue downhill on the tarmac track to return to the car park (S/E).
