Cheval Blanc, Bec du Corbeau and Pointe de Bellevue from Super Chatel

A lovely walk, made accessible by the cable car. Varied and interesting walking with a lake, a quiet path through trees and two great view points.

Description of the walk

Start: Start in Chatel. You can park your car in one of the small car parks or the larger multi-story carpark which is next to the village square. If you are staying in Chatel or one of the other villages in the valley then Chatel is accessible using the service bus and if you have Multi-Pass then the public transport is free.

Walk up through the town to the Super Chatel cable car and take this to Super Chatel; This is where the walk starts and finishes. You will need to catch the cable car down to Chatel or walk down.

(S/E) From the cable car station walk in a Southerly direction on a track across the nursery ski slopes and to the edge of a small lake, Lac de la Mouille.

(1) Walk around the North end of the lake and take the track uphill, it bends to the right and then just as it starts to bend to the left at the base of a wooded ridge look out for a snow shoe sign on a tree to your left.

(2) At the snow shoe sign turn left and take a narrow path which leads up through the trees, the path brings you to a signpost and historic border stones.

(3) Follow the signs for the Bec du Corbeau, yellow diamonds painted on trees will mark the route. Pass under some high tension wires and continue to the summit.

(4) The summit is marked with a signpost but this was loose (summer 2024) and had been moved. You are taking the path with goes steeply down hill in an Easterly direction. Take care on the steep section but it soon eases off and passes under the same high tension wires again. Follow the path (it may vary slightly due to location of electric fences) to pass beside a tow lift. Walk down the slope of the tow lift and then the path leads across a pasture to a bend in an obvious track. where there is an electric Fence and crossing point. Go through and turn left to follow the track up to a junction of three tracks at Portes de Culet, signpost.

(5) From Portes de Culet take the path up to pass beside the cross and in the direction of Pointe de Bellevue. The path ascends in an Easterly direction and is at a fairly steady gradient until just before the top where it eases off a little.

(6) Arrive first at a point above a rocky promontory and then continue to the true summit a little further along. Signpost, cross and orientation table.

(7) Return the way you came to Portes de Culet.

(5) Now take the road running North Eastwards and which descends via a few bends to the chair lift at Chalet Neuf. There is a path on the right which crosses the pasture if you wish to take this instead. From Chalet Neuf stay on the road and follow it to a junction with a track.

(8) Take the track on the left and walk past a long farm building and then past a small lake (le Goillet). The path crosses the border again and descends to the Super Chalet cable car station. (S/E)

In the nearby area

There are good views from Bec du Corbeau and Pointe de Bellevue.

This walk crosses the border ridge between France and Switzerland. The ridge was once the site of much smuggling and there is an old customs house in Chatel which you can visit and which documents the history and stories of the area.

The French IGN map shows what looks like random numbers at places along the ridge. These are in fact the remaining historic marker stones which laid out the boundary. Those on the French side show the coat of arms of the Dukes of Savoie/Kings of Pietmont Sardinia and are different to the current Haute Savoie arms as they incorporate a crown. (These stones will pre-date 1847)The stones on the Swiss side show the coat of arms of Valais. A third stone is engraved on the top to show the line of the border and the side is dated and numbered. The numbers match those on the IGN map. Border stone 42 lies at (3)
