From the centre of Chatel walk into the multi story carpark and descend to the lowest level. Walk out of the exit.
(S) Cross the road and turn right, walk down hill and take a path on the left which leads to some metal steps, these lead down to a road between chalets.
(1) At the bottom off the steps turn right and follow the road to a junction with the main road.
(2) At the junction turn left and walk downhill, follow a sharp bend to the right, then a sharp bend to the left and eventually cross a bridge over the Dranse to arrive at the main road in the bottom of the valley.
(3) Turn right and walk beside the road for a short distance looking out for a track on the opposite side of the road which leads to some tennis courts. Cross over and take this track up. Where is bends to the left take a smaller path on the right so that you walk past a tennis court on your left, the path bends to the left and enters some trees, ascending to a junction with a wider track.
(4) Turn right a follow the wider track through the woods to a place where the track splits.
(5) Take the right hand split which leads down through the woods to a more open area. Keep following the track which leads towards the river, which will be on your right. Arrive at a bridge.
(6) Cross over the bridge and turn left so that the river is now on your left. Follow the good track in this direction, passing beside pasture, the occasional builders yard and parking areas. Always keep the river on your left and do not be tempted by any roads or tracks on the right which lead away from the river and up to the main valley road. Arrive at a bridge over the Ruisseau des Thoules stream which flows down from the Lac d'Arvouin.
(7) Cross the bridge and continue along the track with the river on your left. Cross a second bridge over the Ruisseau de Sechet and shortly after this walk pass some chalets which will be on your right. Continue following the track which leads between the river and pasture to a bridge over the Dranse.
(8) Cross the bridge and turn right. Follow the track with the river on your right again and walk beside an industrial unit to pick up the track which leads to a T junction.
(9) Turn left and walk up towards some houses, then turn right and take the road in front of them which becomes a track again. Follow this around some bends in the river to pass beside more chalets and back into woods and pasture. Arrive at a road.
(10) Cross straight over and keep following the track to were it enters an area with industrial units on the left. (11) Follow the track in the same direction to enter woodland and then to emerge at a pasture and information board. Follow the track around the pasture to where it enters Abondance.
(12) Walk along the road and at the fork take the left hand split. This leads to the village centre (13) .There are shops and cafes here where you can enjoy refreshments. If you turn right and walk through the village you will then cross a bridge over the Dranse and on the other side arrive at the main valley road. Opposite you will see signs for the Abbey. Cross over and walk up to the entrance. (E)
When you have finished take the main valley road back towards Chatel. There you will find the bus stop.
