Description of the walk

The start is at the Fournel car park in Engins. Please follow the instructions on the signs. The start of the walk is marked by a sign at the end of the car park.

(S/E) Follow the road for about ten metres, then turn onto the small path on your right which runs alongside a few houses. Once you reach the road, head up to your left for about fifty metres.

(1) Take a stony path on your right. At the junction, turn right again onto a forest track which will lead you directly to the Sornin plateau. Keep heading north, ignoring any side paths.

(2) When you reach the edge of the plateau, head to your right for a stunningfirst view of the nearby peaks of Moucherotte and Mont Jallat. Cross the plateau to the hamlet.

(3) Take the wide path on your right, which alternates between woodland and meadows, until you reach a signpost indicating the direction of the Dent du Loup or the Sornin.

(4) Head straight towards the Dent du Loup, and take in the view of the drop-off to your left and the foothills of the Sure. Continue on to the Dent du Loup.

(5) Enjoy the sweeping panorama, ignoring the hideous pylons that crown it. Then retrace your steps.

(4) Turn right to tackle the last two climbs along a well-marked path. You will then see, in the distance ahead of you, a sheepfold which will be the perfect spot for a picnic once you reach it.

(6) Pick up the track behind the building (signpost) and follow the path which will take you back through the woods to the Sornin plateau, this time above the hamlet.

(7) Turn right towards the woods, leaving the hamlet on your left.

(8) Turn right again to begin a long descent.

(9) At this junction, do not follow the Yellow Cross or the Green Cross; instead, head straight ahead along the path that winds through the woods down a steep slope. Follow the path at a leisurely pace until you reach the junction where you started.

(1) Head straight on to reach the car park (S/E).

Once on the plateau, you will be in a pastoral area, so please ensure your dogs are kept on a lead.
As you approach and throughout your passage at the Dent du Loup, take great care with your children as the grassy slope leads straight over the edge.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

A number of information boards detailing the history of the plateau and its inhabitants will punctuate much of your route.

A superb hike. In April, the best bits of the hike are the snow and the snowdrops at the summit ☀️ Absolutely stunning.

A lovely walk with magnificent views of the Chartreuse and the Belledonnes. Worth doing again, but in the opposite direction. The descent is steep.

On the morning of 1 January, we didn’t see a soul
As the snow was packed down and/or frozen, I left my snowshoes in the car, which meant I had to head back down the same route I’d taken up (the suggested descent route being impassable without snowshoes). The views are magnificent all around the plateau and up to the peak, as is the section through the forest after the sheepfold. An unmissable hike!
I would add a slight caveat to the description: for a snowshoe route, descriptions such as ‘stony path’ or ‘well-marked trail’ are of little practical use

A lovely, easy circular route for your first day in the Vercors. Stunning, unobstructed views over the Isère valley.
A little longer than described
