Description of the walk

Start from Châtillon harbour, where parking is easy.

(S/E) With your back to the Château, follow the Nivernais Canal on the right-hand side as far as the Coeuillon lock.

(1) Continue straight on along the canal to Pont (rest area).

(2) Leave the canal by taking the dirt track on the right, just by the bridge, and follow it to La Boullaine d’Alluy. Go down the road and then up a little to the left, opposite.

(3) At the Pylône crossroads, turn right towards La Boulaine.

(4) At no. 10, follow the clog-maker’s path down to the right. At the end of the path, turn left and head towards the harbour (S/E).

This hike is very pleasant, with a lovely stretch along the river. The rest is less interesting. You cannot take the Saboterie path because it is closed. However, this gives you the opportunity to see a fawn farm. So we took a short detour to reach the port.

A short walk to get back into the swing of things; the route is clearly described. As the previous commenter suggested, take a little detour to the Coeilhon lock to see the footbridge – it’s a peaceful, quiet and beautiful spot.
Thank you for this lovely route.

A walk taken today, Friday 23 August 2013.
A lovely walk.
Don’t hesitate to take a few detours along the way: the footbridge over the spillway to the left of the canal at the Coeilhon lock is absolutely lovely (and there’s a nice picnic spot if you fancy it)
We also took a detour to Alluy, where there’s a church with an absolutely magnificent Romanesque crypt (14th century) (find the verger – a very charming old gentleman – in the village; he has the keys and will come and open it for you).
All in all, it took us three hours including the detours – lovely, lovely – and we thoroughly enjoyed the scenery (and that unexpected crypt).
