Street art trail in Boulogne-Billancourt

The municipality of Boulogne-Billancourt has commissioned an association to cover a wall approximately 200 metres long with murals. The main aim of this short urban walk is to admire these works of art, which may change over time. Before reaching them, you can see a few trompe-l’œil paintings indicating the direction of the city’s museums.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Over hill and dale in the Hauts-de-Seine

Description of the walk

Starting point and access: Rhin et Danube roundabout.
- Metro – Line 10, Boulogne Pont de Saint-Cloud station (terminus). Get off at the rear of the train and take Exit 2 onto Avenue Jean-Baptiste Clément.
- Bus – Lines 52, 72, 126, 160, 175, 260, 466, 5117, 6246.
- Tram – Line T2, Parc de Saint-Cloud stop. Take the bridge across the Seine, cross the quay and continue straight on along Avenue du Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny until you reach the Rhin et Danube roundabout. Go round the roundabout on the left to reach Avenue Jean-Baptiste Clément.

To avoid having to go back and forth between sections, the murals are listed directly in the description, identified simply by their name in italics. Where a photograph of the mural in question has been taken, a link has been provided.

(S) As you exit the metro station, head straight along Avenue Jean-Baptiste Clément. Walk past the Studios de Boulogne on your right. At the junction with Rue de Silly, look out for a trompe-l’œil on the left indicating the direction of the Paul Belmondo Museum. Then turn right into Rue de Silly. Continue straight ahead and cross Rue de Paris at the traffic lights, followed by Route de la Reine.

(1) At the next junction, turn left onto Avenue André Morizet and you’ll immediately see, on your left, a small mural indicating the direction of the Paul Landowski Museum, featuring reproductions of two of the artist’s works: *David the Warrior* (1900) and *The Shield of the Dead* (1928). Carry on straight ahead, crossing Rue de l’Ancienne Mairie, Rue de Billancourt and Rue d’Aguesseau in turn. At the last junction, look out for a trompe-l’œil on the right indicating the direction of the Musée des Années 30. Continue straight ahead until you reach the entrance to the museum.

(2) Then turn left and walk alongside the Town Hall on your right. At the corner of the building, ignore the entrance to the Town Hall on your right and carry on for a few more metres. Then turn right onto a concrete path and walk alongside a small pond on your right. Pass the lift shafts leading to an underground car park on your right, followed by a replicaof a Koufra Oath monument. Then turn left to join Rue de la Saussière at No. 69 and follow this street as it continues.

(3) At the T-junction, turn left. Immediately cross Boulevard Jean Jaurès and continue straight ahead into Rue Georges Sorel (townhouses on the right). At the end, turn right into Rue de la Belle Feuille. Immediately cross Avenue Victor Hugo at the pedestrian crossing and follow it to the left. Pass Rue Rieux on your right, then the Villa des Princes (private road). Take the next right onto Rue Émile Landrin (townhouses on the right).

(4) At the end, turn left onto Avenue Édouard Vaillant. After about 75 m, turn left onto Rue Paul-Adolphe Souriau. On the left-hand side, the wall of the municipal garages is entirely dedicated to street art. Note the following works in turn (non-exhaustive list): Young women flanking a dog; Butterfly Effect; Condottiere Prince; Medusa and Corals; Offering to the Stars; Woman Emerging from the Waters; Colourful Mask; Colourful Bird; DJ Medhi.

(5) When you reach the end of the street, marked by a simple barrier and barrier tape, retrace your steps. You’ll come out onto Avenue Édouard Vaillant; follow it to the right.

(4) Carry on straight ahead until you reach Place Marcel Sembat (E).

To get back home:
- Metro – Line 9; the entrance is slightly to the right, at the corner of Avenue Édouard Vaillant and Avenue Victor Hugo.
- Bus – Lines 42, 123, 126, 175.
- You can also head to the Rhin et Danube roundabout to catch Metro Line 10 back. To do this, go round Place Marcel Sembat on the right and take the third exit onto Avenue André Morizet. Follow this road straight on until it ends at the Rhin et Danube roundabout. The walk is 1.3 km and takes between 15 and 25 minutes, depending on your pace. Buses 126 and 175 cover this route: board at the Marcel Sembat stop, at the start of Avenue André Morizet, and alight three stops further on at the Rhin et Danube metro station.
- Tram – Line T2. Take bus 126 (see above) and get off at its terminus, Parc de Saint-Cloud.

Notes

A good pair of trainers is sufficient for this urban route.

No water points were spotted along the route. There are numerous bars, restaurants and shops all along the route.

A detailed map is useful (at the very least, the one accompanying this description).

Worth a visit

The Mur de Boulogne, on Rue Paul-Adolphe Souriau, has been entrusted to the Acaci’Art association to showcase the works of both well-known and anonymous graphic artists. The various murals on display are mentioned in the description. For further details on these, it is worth consulting the‘Trompe-l’œil’ website, from which the information provided in the captions of the photos accompanying this urban walk is taken. N.B. The wall is a work in progress and some artworks may be replaced by others.

The Musée des Années 30 and the Musée Paul Landowski (2). These two museums are connected and are best visited together; they are a must-see for Art Deco enthusiasts! This visit can be planned for halfway through the walk or on the way back (see end of the description).
