Boulogne Park and the Menus neighbourhood

The Parc de Boulogne, not to be confused with the Bois du même nom, offers visitors the chance to discover its English-style park and Japanese garden. After visiting the park, you can stroll through the streets of the Menus district, the historic heart of Boulogne.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Over hill and dale in the Hauts-de-Seine

Description of the walk

Starting point and access: Rhin et Danube roundabout.
- Metro - Line 10, Boulogne-Pont de Saint-Cloud station (terminus). Take the exit at the front of the train and turn right towards Avenue du Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny, even numbers.
- Bus - Lines 52, 72, 126, 160, 175, 260, 467.

Yellow markings (from the roundabout)

(S) At the metro exit, turn right towards the Rond-Point Rhin-et-Danube. Start going around the roundabout on the left, cross Rue du Port and turn left onto Avenue Jean-Baptiste Clément on the left-hand pavement. After a few metres, turn left onto Rue des Abondances and walk along the wall of the Jardin Albert Kahn. Turn right onto Rue Anna Jacquin, then left onto Rue Saint-Denis.

No markings

At the fork, continue left onto Rue Saint-Denis (ignore the yellow markings following Rue des Fossés Saint-Denis to the right). At the T-junction, turn right onto Rue de l'Abreuvoir. Immediately turn left onto Rue des Victoires. Ignore Rue du Bac on the right and continue along the one-way street. Pass over the Ambroise Paré tunnel and arrive at the entrance gate to Parc de Boulogne Edmond de Rothschild.

Inside the park, you will find yellow markings, but the route suggested here does not follow them in their entirety.

(1) Enter the park and follow a wide path. Head towards a pond with a large lawn on your right and a playground on your left. At a fork (bench), take the path on the right.

(2) At the crossroads of three paths, ignore a yellow arrow pointing to the right, take the narrower path opposite, which climbs slightly, and leave the pond on your right. At the next crossroads (bench on the left), continue straight ahead. Ignore a vague start on the left and, at the next fork, turn right.

Cross a stream and walk along a pond on your left (artificial waterfall at the bottom on the left). Descend along another stream on your left, then cross it. Go around the western tip of the pond on the left and turn right. Stay close to the pond on your right, with a lawn on your left.

(3) At a fork, turn left and move away from the pond. Just before a tree bearing a yellow cross, leave the path, turn right, pass between two very large plane trees, then near some small rocks and a small tree with an almost horizontal trunk.

At the top of a very short hill, turn left and cross a Japanese bridge with red railings that spans another path. Continue along a curved path and pass a bench on your left. Go down a path with steps and, at the crossroads at the bottom (a kind of cement pedestal table), continue straight ahead. Cross afirst wooden footbridge and go down a staircase.

At the crossroads at the bottom, turn left at a right angle and pass a blue cedar tree (sign) on your right. Cross asecond wooden footbridge and, at the fork immediately ahead, turn right to cross athird footbridge. At the T-junction, turn left and take the Japanese bridge that spans the eastern tip of the pond. Continue along the pond on your right (note the old abandoned Château Rothschild on your left).

(2) At the crossroads, turn left and walk gently uphill with the large lawn on your left to return to the park exit.

(1) When you leave the park, continue along the street opposite and take the first left, Rue du Bac. At the end of the street, cross Rue des Menus and take a look at the picturesque Cours Béranger (private road). Follow Rue des Menus on the right. At the first crossroads, turn left into Rue du Parchamp (note the old well in the courtyard of 12bis). Then take thefirst right, Rue de l'Église, and follow it to the entrance of the Church of Notre-Dame des Menus (open to visitors).

(4) Retrace your steps and take the first left, Rue Tisserand. Cross Rue Lemoine on the left-hand side and at the next crossroads, take thefirst left, Rue Mahias. Then turn right into Rue Petitbon and then left into Rue de Montmorency. Before crossing Rue Anna Jaquin, turn left and cross Place Bernard Palissy in front of the large building that used to be the Salle des Fêtes and the Théâtre de l'Ouest Parisien.

At the end, cross Rue Mahias and then turn right onto Avenue Jean-Baptiste Clément, following it to the left. Take thesecond right onto Rue d'Aguesseau, then thefirst left onto Rue des Tilleuls. Cross Boulevard Jean-Jaurès and continue a few metres along Rue des Tilleuls. At the fork, follow Rue Maurice Delafosse to the left.

(5) At the roundabout, cross Rue Fessart and take Rue Vauthier. Then turn right onto Rue Gambetta and, at the next intersection, continue straight ahead. At a triangular square, continue straight ahead and then turn left onto Rue Fessart. At the traffic lights, note the entrance to the Boulogne-Jean Jaurès metro station on the left (return possible via line 10).

(6) Cross Rue du Château and continue along Rue Fessart. At the end, turn left onto Rue de Paris. At the corner of No. 65, turn sharply right into Villa Marie-Justine (metal gate; private road but pedestrian access permitted). Follow this small street and note the houses of very varied architecture that line it.

After a left turn, leave the road by going through a gate on the left-hand side. You will come out onto Route de la Reine; follow it to the right. Cross Boulevard Jean Jaurès in two stages. Turn immediately left, cross Route de la Reine and continue straight ahead onto Rue de la Saussière.

At the corner of No. 26, you will come out onto Grand Place: cross this large pedestrian area diagonally to the right, towards the cinema complex. Continue to the right along Rue Le Corbusier.

(7) At the crossroads, turn left onto Rue d'Aguesseau. At the traffic lights, turn left, cross Rue Galliéni in two stages and continue along Avenue André Morizet.

Walk past the monumental Town Hall and, at the corner, turn left onto a cemented alleyway. Pass a statue on your left and walk past a curved building with a distinctive blue mosaic façade. Then turn right onto Rue de la Saussière. At the next intersection, turn left onto Rue Georges Sorel.

Cross Boulevard Jean Jaurès and continue along Rue Georges Sorel. At the end, turn right onto Rue de la Belle Feuille. At the end, cross Avenue Victor Hugo at the pedestrian crossing and follow it to the right until you reach the Place Marcel Sembat metro station (E).

To return home:
- Metro - Line 9.

Thank you for this wonderful discovery of Boulogne Park with its vast grassy areas, remarkable trees and Japanese garden, the highlight of the walk (despite the closure for works around the pond until mid-March 2019, which meant we couldn't follow the recommended route).
Otherwise, we wandered through the streets of Boulogne, a route without surprises, except for a few special features: the old well on Rue du Parchamp, the Villa Justine...

The red route is always reliable, but the blue route is often unpredictable (though this may be due to the smartphone or network connection).

A short but pleasant urban walk through the very charming neighbourhoods of Boulogne, where you can find architecture from almost every era, yet which forms a very homogeneous whole and holds a few surprises, such as this well in a courtyard. I continued this walk with the following route in Billancourt.

Hello,

Thank you to Patrick H. for pointing out the closure of the Passerelle de l'Avre, which I had overlooked, and apologies for this mishap. The works are scheduled to continue until 2018.

In the meantime, I have modified the route. In order to avoid making it too long or including sections along busy roads, I have decided not to suggest an alternative route for crossing the Seine (via the Pont de Suresnes or the Pont de Saint-Cloud). Instead, I have mapped out a stroll through the historic Menus district. As a result, the walk is about half as long and no longer passes through the Parc de Saint-Cloud. I have therefore also changed the title of the walk (which has automatically changed the title of this topic). The URL for the walk remains unchanged.

As soon as the footbridge reopens, I will restore the old walk.

Thank you, Patrick H.
After 91 years of closure, the work must be substantial
The author will certainly add this information to the technical details of the hike.

Hello

We were forced to stop the hike at the L'Arve footbridge because it is closed until September 2018. There is no way to cross the Seine.
Please pass this on.

For those of us who live in Essonne, this hike allowed us to discover two beautiful parks that are very different from each other and that we knew nothing about. The description was impeccable, but we also used the GPS track (GPX) provided by Visorando for the first time and were delighted with this option for guidance.

Done today, with a few modifications. Starting from St Cloud station, we walked clockwise and were unable to follow the route from marker 10 onwards because the park was closed at that point. This was probably temporary, due to preparations for the Rock en Seine festival.
Otherwise, we found this hike really interesting and varied, with many points of interest along the way that everyone can explore according to their own curiosity. Thank you for this easy route, which is really worthwhile.
