From Boulogne to Bougival via the Parc de Saint-Cloud and the Bois de La Celle

This hike first takes us up the hill of Saint-Cloud, then through the park of the same name with its gardens, flower beds, ponds and Greco-Roman-inspired statues. We then walk through a residential area with beautiful houses. After crossing the Bois de La Celle, we walk through the "village" of La Celle Saint-Cloud to reach Bougival station.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Through the forests of western Paris

At Place de Lessay (car park on the right), continue straight ahead along Allée des Lilas towards Parc de Saint-Cloud. Go through the gate, enter the park and continue straight ahead along a shaded path. At the end, climb a flight of wooden steps on the right.

No signposts

Then turn left, go past a rotunda and walk along a path lined with beautiful rose bushes. Go up a staircase on the right. At the top, turn left. Go up another flight of steps on the right to reach a viewpoint.

(2) With your back to the view of Paris and the Seine, follow a large path westwards and, after a few metres, go through a wooden gate on the right to enter the Jardin du Trocadéro (see a winter alternative in the practical information section). At the fork that appears immediately, take the path on the right. At the next junction, turn left and cross a ditch.

Red and white markings

At the crossroads, take thefirst path on the left and rejoin theGR®®1. Walk along a small lake on your left. At the fork located at a rotunda (with numerous benches), turn right. At the next crossroads, go straight ahead. Ignore a path coming from the right and, at a fork (not shown on the map), turn left. Cross a ditch and, at the T-junction, turn right to leave the Jardin du Trocadéro. Then turn right, go through a gate, note the ponds below on the left and follow a wide path to a forest barrier. Then turn sharply left towards the ponds.

No markings

(3) Go around the roundabout on the right, pass by the foot of the statue of Neptune and cross a lawn. Shortly before the statue of Jupiter, take the path on the right that goes up the lawn. You will come to the Bassin de la Grande Gerbe and go around it on the left. Pass in front of a restaurant, then turn left (due south) onto a shaded path along a lawn. N.B. The lawn is bordered by two paths; take the second path after the restaurant, with the lawn on your left. Pass a metal gate on your right.

Yellow markings

(4) At the next intersection (small marker post), turn right and walk along the fence of a reservoir. At the end of the fence, turn left onto a path that leads into the woods. After a winding route, you will come out onto the Allée (tarmac road) de la Grande Gerbe and follow it to the left. At the roundabout, leave the yellow markings for a moment and turn right (due west) onto a path parallel to Allée de la Lanterne: this path is thesecond tarmac road on the right and leads to the park entrance gate.

Go through the gatehouse and then the gate, rejoin the markings and cross (with caution) the D985 road. Continue on the path opposite and go through a small gate to re-enter the park. Go straight ahead, walking along a lawn on your right. Pass a large stone basin on your right (in August 2019, the basin had been removed and only the base remained) and climb a steep slope through the undergrowth.

(5) At the top, at a T-junction, follow a track on the left that was once tarmac (you can still see traces of it). Stay on this main track and ignore the paths branching off to the right. At a crossroads, turn left onto a path leading downhill. At the next crossroads, turn left. Join a road and turn left to leave the park. Follow the road (Rue de la Porte Blanche) straight ahead to the church and town hall of Marnes-la-Coquette.

At the crossroads immediately ahead, turn left into Rue des Fonds Huguenots. Walk briefly along the railway line on your left. At the next crossroads, follow Sente du Bois des Dames to the left until you reach a perpendicular avenue (route D173).

No signposts

Cross the avenue (take care) and take the path opposite, which leads discreetly into the undergrowth.

Red and white markings

At the next crossroads, rejoin theGR®®1, follow it to the right and cross over the railway line. Shortly before a forest barrier, take a path on the left. Then turn right to reach the Pavillon du Butard (former hunting lodge).

(10) After the lodge, turn left and go down a stony path. At the various intersections with narrower paths, always go straight ahead (north-west). The path narrows and heads north-north-west. You will come to a crossroads.

(12) Follow an avenue to the right (Avenue de la Pompadour on the map). At the stop sign, turn left onto Avenue Auguste Ducreux. Opposite the cemetery entrance gate, turn left onto a downhill path. At the bottom, turn right. Then turn left and go down another path. At the bottom, turn right at a sharp angle onto Avenue Yves Levallois. Cross Rue de Vindé on the left and you will arrive at Place de l'Église de La Celle Saint-Cloud.

(13) Turn left and follow Rue de la République, ignoring the roads on the right. At the traffic lights, cross the avenue (D174) and follow Allée Saint-Michel (the leftmost street) opposite. A very pleasant walk with no major difficulties, which allowed us to discover the Parc de Saint-Cloud and a part of the Paris region that we didn't know. We extended the route a little by turning off at bridge 13 towards the Parc de la Jonchère (Turgenev's dacha) and reached Chatou station by following the Seine.

Thank you for this unexpected hike on the outskirts of Paris. We chose to park in Marly-le-Roi (car park at the station and nearby, free on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays). We travelled to Saint-Cloud by train (15-minute journey, trains every 15 minutes on Saturdays, €1.95 for an adult ticket). We picked up the route described in Saint-Cloud. The route is very pleasant, with lots of wooded areas. We had a picnic at the Pavillon du Butard (bench in the sun). At La Celle Saint Cloud, we continued along the GRP route to Marly-le Roi. After a stroll in the park, we left via the Route de Bacchus, then turned right to rejoin the GRP via the picturesque "Grande Rue" and returned to the station. The total route is 16.75 km with these variations.

A very pleasant and easy hike (except for the stairs at the end!)
We changed the starting point and set off from the T2 museum in Sèvres, leaving directly from the bottom of St Cloud park and joining point 3 of the description.
Not many people, but it was a Wednesday

A beautiful hike, easily accessible from central Paris, focusing on the surrounding parks and forests and taking you through the charming little towns of the western suburbs. I got a little lost in the last part of the walk (in the Bois de la Celle), but that was definitely due to a lack of attention on my part... Best regards to the team and thank you all.

Hello Fabio, and thank you for your comments!

Good point! It's obviously west you need to go when you're at the location indicated... An error that slipped through the net, both when writing and proofreading. Thank you for pointing it out!

Well done on this description! Rarely seen precision and clarity! Each description was very precise. The wording was clear and straightforward. The only problem we noticed was that at the beginning, in Saint-Cloud Park, with your back to the Seine, you have to walk west, not east
