Starting point and access: Rhin-et-Danube roundabout.
- Metro - Line 10, Boulogne-Pont de Saint-Cloud station (terminus). Take exit 3 Rue du Port - Musée Albert-Khan, at the front of the train, then the stairs on the left.
- Bus - Lines 52, 72, 126, 160, 175, 260, 467; Rhin-et-Danube metro stop.
No signage
(S) Follow Avenue du Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny away from the roundabout. Cross Quai du Quatre Septembre in three stages. First turn right then left to take a footbridge with blue railings (do not cross the Seine). Go down a staircase and, at the bottom, turn left to follow a footpath parallel to a small road.
(1) When the road curves to the right, at a large portico on the right-hand side, leave the tarmac and turn left onto the towpath, as close to the river as possible. Follow the narrow towpath straight ahead, which is mostly a dirt track, cemented in a few places. It is shaded throughout and lined with houseboats.
(2) When passing under the A13 motorway bridge, watch out for a mooring cable across the path (which is very narrow at this point). The towpath then crosses a kind of lawn and becomes shaded again. Ignore all the turnings on the right and continue to the corner of the flood control station at the foot of the Passerelle de l'Avre footbridge.
(3) Here, there are two options:
- As shown on the map, continue along the towpath dominated by a large wall on the right-hand side, from which large pipes emerge. During floods, the pipes can discharge water at high speed: never use this passage during a flood; outside of flood season, do not linger. At the foot of the footbridge, climb a very steep staircase on the right, which fortunately has a good handrail.
- Alternatively, at the corner of the wall, find a path on the right that winds its way through the undergrowth. Climb up to the Quai du Quatre Septembre and follow it to the left.
In both cases, you will end up at the bottom of the stairs leading to the footbridge. Then head diagonally towards a traffic light and you will arrive at the foot of the ramp that allows cyclists to access the footbridge.
Red and white markings
Then take a gravel path on the left and pass a small brick building on your left. Go through a forest gate and follow the towpath again, ignoring all the paths on the right. Note several houseboats moored permanently.
No markings
At the black metal footbridge leading to a moored houseboat, continue straight ahead on the towpath (ignore theGR®® trail branching off to the right). At a fork, go straight ahead (ignore the path on the right that goes up to the bridge).
(4) Pass under the Pont de Suresnes bridge via a wooden pontoon. Return to the towpath. After about 100 metres, continue along a small tarmac road. Shortly afterwards, go around on the right and between two fences to bypass an area that is closed to pedestrians due to subsidence. Continue as close as possible to the Seine on the left-hand side and along the fence of the Paris campsite on the right-hand side.
Further on, go around the fenced-off safety area of the Suresnes dam and lock on the right. Return to the banks of the Seine just downstream from the dam.
(5) Continue along the river. Note the large plane trees on the right-hand side and the Île de Puteaux on the opposite bank. Cross an area covered with small pebbles, ignore a path on the right and join the D1 road at the foot of the Bagatelle fire pump (an old building topped with a bell tower).
(6) Pass the building and then turn left. Go through a chicane and continue along a dirt track. Further on, go through a second chicane, come out onto a road, follow it to the left and go up to the Pont de Puteaux. Cross at the traffic lights and then turn left to take the bridge and cross a branch of the Seine.
(7) At the next traffic lights, turn right towards the stadiums and sports park. Go slightly downhill and ignore a street on the right-hand side. Shortly afterwards, turn left towards the banks of the Seine. Pass a dog park on your right and go down a stone staircase. Then go down a metal staircase.
At the bottom, turn right at a sharp angle and follow the towpath (concrete). There are two levels: choose the lower or upper level depending on your preference and... the water level. Pass under a footbridge. Note the towers of La Défense in the distance on the opposite bank.
Near the Pont de Neuilly bridge, the path moves away from the river. Walk along a fence on your right, go through a small gate and leave a large gate with the inscription "Ville de Puteaux" on your right. Go through a wooden gate and walk along a building on your right. At the end of the building, turn left towards the bridge. Climb a large staircase and step onto the bridge.
(8) Then turn left and cross a branch of the Seine. At the end of the bridge, cross the quay at the pedestrian crossing and walk alongside a bus stop. Then turn left and cross a large paved area (Terrasse Bellini).
At the end, turn right towards the Axe de la Défense and the underground. Walk along a building on your left, then turn right towards an escalator, still heading towards the underground. Take the escalator or climb the stairs running parallel to it. At the top, turn right and go under a porch (restaurants). This will quickly take you to the Esplanade de La Défense metro station (E) on your left.
To return home:
- Metro - Line 1, towards La Défense Grande Arche (connection with Tram T2 and Transiliens L and U) or Château de Vincennes via central Paris.
