Via Anse de Penfoulic and the La Forêt-Fouesnant estuary

An easy route along the Anse de Penfoulic and then the La Forêt-Fouesnant estuary, opposite the imposing Port la Forêt marina, a hub for water sports. The return route follows the protected natural marshland area.

The landscape changes dramatically depending on the tide level. This is a wintering ground for several bird species, including the common shelduck and the brant goose.

Description of the walk

GR34: Red and white markings.

(S/E) From the car park, head north-west along the footpath bordering Anse de Penfoulic and pass the jetty of the old little harbour. At the bend, take the foreshore or the path above, depending on the tide: the two meet a little further on.

(1) Continue over the footbridge spanning the stream flowing from the marsh and follow the path to reach the dyke with its turret. This regulates the flow of water between the Penfoulic ponds and the sea cove (see web link).

(2) Turn right and cross the dyke. At the end, turn right. Here, there are also two options: a raised path lined with old oak trees at high tide, or a route across the foreshore at low tide. The two paths also meet up and then run alongside private properties.

(3) Turn left as you leave the cove to go round the Kerist estate on your right. At the end of this wooded stretch, you’ll emerge onto the Port la Forêt estuary and its seagrass beds, frequented by numerous birds (viewpoint over the water sports centre). Continue along the edge of the estuary, then take a small road leading to the oyster farms. Pass a small slipway (toilets and water point). Arrive at the path leading to Port la Forêt.

Orange markings.

(4) Turn right and follow the path to reach the marina via the footbridge. At the end, turn right towards the end of the jetty which marks the entrance to the harbour (view of Cap Coz Point). Continue along the pontoons where the boats taking part in numerous competitions are moored.

Orange and green markings.

(5) Turn left as you leave the harbour pontoons, pass through a small wood and, facing the back of the golf course, turn left to rejoin the path between the estuary on your left and the golf course on your right. Continue along the road leading to the 17th-century Mesmeur manor house, which now houses the golf clubhouse. At the end, turn left below the car park along the edge of the estuary (swans are usually present).

Orange, yellow and blue markings.

(6) Take the path on the left that runs alongside the estuary on the La Forêt-Fouesnant side, below the town hall. Follow this path, which passes below the ‘Notre-Dame Izel Vor’ school, past a sports ground, and leads to a car park which you cross.

No signposting.

(7) Cross the Route du Vieux Port and take the Route de Kerambaber opposite, which climbs steadily. Ignore the side streets and continue to a small roundabout.

Yellow signposting.

Turn left and, at the next three-way junction, keep right onto the Route de Prat Ar zant, which descends steadily to an area where you’ll find a grassy clearing with a wash house on the left.

(8) Turn right, near a glass recycling bin, onto a discreet path overlooking the end of the Penfoulic ponds and head towards the hamlet of Pontérec (campsite and cider house). The end of the path does not appear on the IGN map but is visible on OSM. Reach the D44.

No signposting.

(9) Cross with extreme caution, as traffic can be heavy at times, and continue straight ahead along the disused road known as the Chemin du Petit Rospiec. Go round the buildings of the Atelier 5 chocolate factory and a metalworking company. Look out for a cross on the left with a commemorative plaque marking the liberation of the Fouesnant district in August 1944. You will reach the D44 again.

Dark blue markings.

(10) Cross with extreme caution, as traffic can be heavy at times, and take the small road opposite. Follow this narrow road lined with trees, meadows and orchards. You will reach the Maison des Marais on the right. Turn left onto a wide, sunken track and head towards the dyke.

(2) Retrace your steps along the Anse de Penfoulic to return to the starting car park (S/E).

A very easy walk, with no significant elevation gain or particular difficulty, allows walkers to simply enjoy the scenery and the sense of teeming life, particularly around Penfoulic Cove, where the shores are frequented by waders and a few majestic swans, and then through the woods and marshes of the same name. A variety of landscapes, ranging from the natural surroundings to the old port of La Forêt-Fouesnant, from the sea to the forest, encompassing every natural shade of green and blue, and all across this acidic soil, an explosion of bright colours beneath the camellias, azaleas, magnolias and rhododendrons...

A lovely walk on a gloomy day. We took a shortcut from point 2 to 8 to avoid the road. The route was very well signposted and the scenery was beautiful. Thank you for this walk, which we enjoyed as a family.

This route is best done at high tide – it’s much prettier!

A lovely walk from Cap Coz to Fouesnant Forest via Port-la-Forêt. The first part is magnificent. ... (sea mill, oyster beds, etc.) We didn’t enjoy the return leg as much. More tarmac and two road crossings that were a bit tricky.
Description was spot on, as always
