Head to the Saint-Lié Chapel: a wooded hill north-west of Ville-Dommange. You’ll find plenty of parking there.
(S/E) Head back south along the route you took by car, crossing the D6 (Rue de Saint-Lié) straight ahead. Head south up a concrete track through the vineyards.
Just over 700 m from the start, the path curves to the left.
At this point, enter the forest via the path on the right. A Blue Cross and a Yellow Cross on a tree to your left confirm that you are on the right track.
You will then follow a grassy track through fairly sparse Scots pine woodland. Follow the mountain bike route markings: ‘4’ in green and ‘5’ in blue.
At the first junction, turn left, continuing to follow this mountain bike route along a wider path.
Carry on straight ahead, heading due south. You’ll come to an ‘X’-shaped junction.
(1) Take the path on your right, as indicated by the mountain bike signposting (4 and 5). You’ll follow the edge of the forest, near the Ferme Heurtebise clearing.
(2) Ride more than 250 m beyond the clearing. Then take the path on your left – MTB trails 4 and 5 – leaving the ‘retour Courmas’ signpost on your right.
(3) Leave mountain bike route ‘4’ on your left and continue straight on along mountain bike route ‘5’.
You will then ride alongside a tall, sparse forest of large ash and oak trees.
Carry on straight ahead; the path descends slightly. Keep going straight ahead, ignoring MTB trail 5 (which veers to the right).
You’ll come to a large triangular junction with a wide, stony forest track.
(4) At the forest track, turn 90° to the left, heading north-west. Continue in a west-north-westerly direction. The stony track then turns into a wide grassy path or ‘allée sommière’,
Walk along its left-hand side: there are numerous ruts.
You’ll reach a viewpoint overlooking the village of Ecueil.
(5) At the viewpoint, you’ll rejoin the MTB Route 5; turn left here, heading north, between the vineyards and the forest.
From here on, the rest of your route is signposted along theGR®®142.
Keep going straight on; you’ll then be walking through the woodland.
The path follows theGR®®; at one point it descends, and you’ll reach a viewpoint overlooking Ville-Dommange.
(6) You’ll then find yourself near a cross, with a view of the village of Ville-Dommange; head down towards the village on the right, still following theGR®®, which runs along a concrete path through the vineyards.
(7) You’ll cross the D6 road (Rue Saint-Lié) again; take a series of winding, uphill streets: go straight on along Rue Ronde, then, on your left, take Rue des Quatre Vents, which climbs ‘steeply’ towards the copse. You are now at the foot of the famous Calvary of the Passion at the Chapelle Saint-Lié; you will find your car parked on your left (S/E).
). Be careful too with the recent storms, as trees have fallen and you have to climb over them or crawl underneath.
