Two circular loops between Sacy and Courmas

A short hike, mainly through the forest. Pleasant in summer but best avoided in heavy rain due to muddy patches.
In some places, you leave the path entirely and it is essential to follow the trail.
A GPS or the Visorando app is recommended for following the route due to numerous new paths as well as paths leading nowhere.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in the small car park behind and below Sacy Church.

(S/E) From the car park, continue up Rue Saint-Vincent. At the Y-junction, turn right (house with a low stone wall). You will reach a crossroads before the picnic tables.

(1) Turn right, head into the woods and you will come to theGR® 142 junction further on.

(2) Take it to the right and leave it on the left at the next junction. Follow this path, ignoring all paths to the right or left (a clearly visible parallel track allows you to avoid any muddy patches). You will reach a large junction of paths at elevation 249.

(3) Turn onto the path on the right and follow the mountain bike signs indicating the return route to Courmas. Reach this village.

(4) Turn left twice, uphill, to reach the edge of the woods.

(5) Head right along the edge of the woods, then veer slightly left. You may spot an elevated hunting blind.
Cross the woods again to reach a path, head slightly left then go straight on until you reach the power lines. Go under them, turn left then follow them until you reach the junction with a new path.

(6) Turn right and continue straight on to reach the large crossroads you passed on the way out.

(3) Turn right at a 90° angle (follow the track carefully). Continue straight ahead to reach another multi-way junction.

(7) Turn left, passing close to a boundary marker. Stay on this path to reach the junction at the edge of the woods and vineyards. This junction is also where theGR®142meets the route.

(8) Turn left onto theGR® between the vineyards and the forest, re-enter the woods to reach the junction you passed on the way out.

(2) Turn right back onto the path you took on the way out and head for the first crossroads, where the picnic tables are.

(1) Go straight on towards the manor house. Then, just after the old school, turn left and cross the cemetery. Go down the steps by the church, then take the steps immediately to the left to return to the car park (S/E).

Picnic table at the start and finish.
Restaurant next to the car park.

It was a huge let-down for me – it started off well, but once you reach the vineyards, things get tricky. There are too many paths, and of course the ones you need to take are narrow; there are lots of fallen branches, and heavy machinery has caused a lot of damage, so some areas are swarming with mosquitoes because of the standing water. I didn’t find the directions very clear, so I took a few detours. In short, this hike was a real nightmare; I thought I’d never finish it 😱.

Just to clarify, I did use the app – I’m not completely daft! – and I can read a map ^^. That doesn’t stop you from struggling when you’re out there. If you know the area, all the better for you; you’re certainly less likely to take the wrong paths. If you don’t know it, good luck and be careful, as some parts are dangerous.

Hello,

It’s not my usual route, but it’s an area I know well. The paths aren’t signposted, and even a hiker who can read a map will need to use the app, otherwise they’ll get lost.

I didn’t find the directions very clear; I had to go back and forth in some places because I couldn’t find the right path, particularly between points 5 and 6 – a real nightmare 😮‍💨. In short, this hike was a real nightmare; I thought I’d never finish it 😱
The only highlight was the view of Sacy Castle 🏰.

Exactly! In Champagne, the trails are very peaceful, but in wet weather there’s a lot of mud.

Visited in dry weather, so the paths and tracks are passable, but in wet weather the ruts left by vehicles must make the terrain impassable!

A pleasant walk in dry weather – it’s a shame the paths have been damaged by motorised vehicles!

A lovely walk in the sunshine. We really enjoyed discovering the springtime vegetation here.
As the weather was dry, we weren’t bothered by the muddy patches that had been mentioned. We’ll be back in Courmas at another
season

A lovely walk, but we had trouble finding our way. Be careful – there are lots of motorbikes and quads in the forest. It’s not pleasant breathing in exhaust fumes.
All in all, a very nice walk
