Climb up to the Ermita de Santa Barbara in Jijona

A little way from the historic centre and tourist routes, this short walk will show you the town of Jijona from a different angle through the eyes of the Ermita de Santa Barbara, a small 15th-century chapel, forgotten by all, perched on a hill of the same name. From its summit, you will not only have an unusual view of Jijona and its castle, but also of Alicante and the entire surrounding valley. Although there is a slight incline, this walk is relatively easy and accessible to all.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park on Calle del Safareig.

(S/E) Take the stairs at the back of the car park down to the street of the same name (Safareig). Walk down this street to the right until you reach the junction of Avenida Joan Fuster and Carrer d'Enric Valor. Turn left down this street and, at the end, take Carrer Francesc Nicolau Mira Miralles on the right.

(1) Pass in front of the Ermita de Sant Sebastià chapel and continue to the roundabout. Go around it on the right to head towards the CV-800 road exit ramp. Be careful here, as you will need to take this ramp for a few metres to access the path.

(2) Take the path on the left and follow the trail. You will enter a slightly wooded area.

(3) At this point, it will appear as though the path continues straight ahead: keep to the right and follow the path through the wooded area.

(4) At the end of this area, the path disappears a little among the rocks. Be careful, as this section is a little steep and slippery. Continue climbing and, on your left, you will have the opportunity to climb up onto a small promontory to admire the view. Then continue to the top, at the entrance to the Ermita de Santa Barbara.

(5) Feel free to go around it on the left, taking care as the ravine is close and steep, to go behind it and admire the view over the whole valley before starting the descent along the same path you took on the way up to the roundabout. After going around it on the left, continue straight on along Carrer Gabriel Miró to Avenida Joan Fuster. Turn right onto this road, then left onto Carrer de Jericó for a short climb through the houses, which will give you a glimpse of the chapel perched on the hill. Then turn right onto Carrer del Safareig to return to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

A short tour of the town of Jijona is a must! A mecca for the production of turrón (Spanish nougat), you can visit the Museo del Turrón (just outside the town) and/or climb up to the castle, of which little remains, but from where you can enjoy beautiful views of the town, the coast and the Ermita de Santa Bárbara!

If you are lucky enough to be there in early December, don't miss the Fería del Turrón, a Christmas market dedicated to the famous nougat.
