Pou del Canonge in Ibi

The word "pou" is Valencian and means snow well. This was a very important trade involving the manufacture of ice from snow, which was more abundant at that time. This activity, which began in the 16th or 17th century, came to an end in the mid-20th century with the advent of the refrigerator.
This trail offers a chance to see the remains of the snow well known as del Canonge, but most of the route is off-trail and requires some mountain experience and good navigation skills. This hike is therefore only suitable for experienced hikers.

Please note: Due to the difficulty of navigating this route, it is strongly recommended that you use the app (or a hiking GPS)

Description of the walk

The starting point for this hike is located on a vacant lot, just after the motorway overpass in Ibi at exit 460 on Cami de Servei towards Serafines.
To get to this starting point by car, see the "Practical information" section below.

(S/E) Continue up the street, this time on foot, towards the Municipal Nature Park, cross a junction and, at the tiny building, take the road on the left marked "Parque Natural San Pascual". You will reach a junction marked with a signpost.

(1) Take the road on the right towards "Ermita Sant Pasqual". This is a path marked PR®-CV127, so follow the white and yellow signs. Pass the "Fraternidad San José" congregation and take the path on the left. This will take you to the Ermita.

(2) Go up the steps and follow the path, which is lined with barriers and clearly marked with white and yellow signs. You are now on the path called "Cami dels Geladors". A little further on, you will see another sign and follow the directions for "Mas de Torretes and Cabeç del Canyo". You will come to a white signpost marked "Microreserva de Flora Les Torretes" at a crossroads.

(3) Take the path on the right. Join a section of road on the left as you climb. Leave it at the top of the climb via a very small path on the right that leads into the forest.
This is where the adventure begins, because although the path is clearly visible at first, many trees have fallen across it and, although the path is almost straight, you have to zigzag in all directions to get around all the trees. From then on, the route is only indicative but gives a direction to follow.
The main thing is to find yourself near a kind of gate, but above all on a wide path

(4) Turn left onto this quiet path. Pass a cement pond with the date of construction written in the cement (14/05/2016) and reach an intersection.

(5) Take the path on the left, then follow the right-hand edge of the field and continue straight ahead. This is a very pretty mountain path that runs alongside a barranco. Finally , you will find a cairn confirming that you are going in the right direction.

(6) From there, progress will be more difficult at times, as the vegetation takes over.
I have therefore left a few additional cairns to help with navigation. Continue like this for about 200 m.

(7) Continue straight ahead at this point. The path is now well inside the ravine. After about 100 metres, look for a large stone wall ahead.

(8) Go to the right. Progress is difficult, and after a few dozen metres, a second stone wall appears.

(9) Climb up this wall at the start and continue along the path heading north-east. Further on, pass a ruined hut. The path disappears again at this point. Keep going in the same direction and you will get closer to Pou perdu in the middle of nowhere, but again there is no visible path and there are lots of fallen trees. Another wall appears on the right.

(10) Head right and climb up the wall. Keep going in this direction. You'll see where you need to go and another stone wall.

(11) Climb up this stone wall, continue for about 60 m and you will arrive at Pou del Canonge. The openings are protected by barriers and the bottom of the well is covered with vegetation.

(12) Continue around the well. The path down is clearly visible at the start but then disappears among the trees and vegetation. Find the path and follow it to the right, heading northeast until you reach a very wide track.

(13) Follow this track to the right. The orientation problems are over, but there is still a fairly long way to go to reach the starting point.
The track turns left and then right, heading south-southwest until it reaches a wide left-hand bend.

(14) Look for a small well on the right-hand side of the path. Continue downhill and you will see signs for private properties overlooking the path, but do not enter them. When the slope levels out, the path turns south and comes to a crossroads.

(15) Turn left and head north for about 150 m. After the right-hand bend, the path turns south-east. It is then joined by a track coming from the farmhouse "L'Assagator de Dalt". Shortly afterwards, you will arrive at the farmhouse "Assagator de Baix".

(16) Just after the farmhouse and before the bridge, take the road on the left that leads to a road running alongside the A-7 motorway.

(17) At the stop sign, turn right and follow the Via Verde de Alcoi. This is actually just a paved road running parallel to the motorway, a few metres away from it.
Continue, taking your time and staying on the left side of the road (there is very little traffic) until you reach the starting point (S/E).

Notes

To get to the starting point of the hike by car:
From Alicante city, take the A31 motorway (from Calle Mexico) towards Madrid and quickly take exit 236A towards Benidorm and Valencia. Then quickly take exit 17 towards Alcoï (or Alcoy). Once you have passed the roundabout towards Alcoy, follow the A77 motorway, which becomes the A7. Take exit 460 towards Ibi.
Note: exit 459 indicated by some GPS systems does not exist: be sure to take exit 460.
At the roundabout, take thefirst exit towards Ibi (signposted 2 km). You will pass over the motorway you have just left and at the roundabout take the Cami de Servei exit.
Turn quickly onto the second road on the left with the two large signs for Serafines and Paraje Natural Municipal. Park immediately on the right.

For information, from Alicante, it is approximately 48 km by car and takes around 40 minutes.
