Around Maigmó from El Aljibe near Agost

The Maigmó, at an altitude of 1,295 metres, is one of the region’s best-known peaks. However, this walk does not take you to the summit itself, but instead offers an extraordinary circuit around it. After a steep climb to the Balcon d’Alicante, where the view is fantastic, the walk takes you via the famous Col de la Xau, offering magnificent views of the peaks. You follow a barranco (a stream bed), passing through the superb spot known as ‘El Estret’. In short, everything is beautiful and practically in perfect solitude.

Description of the walk

The starting point for this walk is on Camino 2 to 13 in El Aljibe.
To reach this starting point by car, please refer to the ‘Practical Information’ section below.

(S/E) From the car park, continue along the tarmac road and, straight away, take the dirt track on the right. It is clearly marked and easy to follow, but it climbs steeply and the ground, made up of small pebbles, is slippery. You’ll arrive at the Balcon d’Alicante.

(1) Take this opportunity to rest for a while and take the time to look around. Continue along the path by taking the tarmac road straight ahead.

(2) Leave the tarmac road and take a wide path on the left. Ignore the first junction on the right and carry on to the next one.

(3) Do not go straight on, but turn left, following the wide track to reach the Col de La Xau at 1078 m.

(4) Begin a long descent along the very wide track (it’s almost like a boulevard!).

(5) Leave the track and take the small path on the left. This change of direction is marked by a small cairn, but it’s easy to miss. Head down and follow a ravine: so it’s impossible to get lost.

(6) Walk past a car (a Land Rover): a rather unlikely sight in the middle of nowhere. Further on, you’ll notice terraced fields. You’ll reach a crossroads.

(7) Turn left and arrive at the spot known as El Estret.

(8) Looking down into the ravine, you’ll notice that the mountains converge at this point and the passage is very narrow. It’s easy to imagine that this passage used to be difficult to cross. Walk along the wide track, which is therefore less daunting.

(9) At the signpost, turn sharp left and head for the spot known as ‘nacimiento del estret’.

(10) At the signpost, turn left onto the small path, then immediately left again. This path will be signposted in white and green. Go round a small hilltop and you’ll reach a Fork in the road.

(11) Head left towards “Pantano”. You’ll reach an unnamed pass:the large mountain on the right is the Revolcador, which rises to an altitude of 1,048 metres.

(12) Continue along the path until you reach a Fork in the road.

(13) Take the path on the left until you reach a star-shaped junction where you’ll join the El Aljibe estate (or L’Aljub housing estate) at Camino 13.

(14) Simply follow the road back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

To drive to the start of the walk

From Alicante city centre, take the A31 motorway (from Calle Mexico) towards Madrid and, shortly afterwards, take exit 236A towards Benidorm and Valencia. Then, shortly afterwards, take exit 17 towards Alcoï (or Alcoy). Once past the roundabout heading towards Alcoy, follow the A77 motorway, which becomes the A7.

Take exit 482, drive past the petrol station and continue straight on. Turn left to go under the motorway, heading towards the CV-827 Agost, and follow this road.

On the CV-827, after the 1-kilometre mark, turn right towards El Aljibe, then turn right almost immediately towards Caminos 2 to 13 and, at the exit of the bend that curves to the left, park on the right-hand side.

For information, the rating established by the French Hiking Federation (FFR) is as follows: IBP = 65, length = 10.7 kilometres and elevation gain = 611 metres.
