The summit of Escobella near Agost

A hike in an almost desert environment to climb two peaks: La Mosca and L'Escobella. Don't forget to bring plenty of water, as the entire route is on paths exposed to the sun.

Description of the walk

The starting point for this hike is located near the Mesón Maigmo car park on the road leading to the Tibi dam. To get to this starting point by car, see the "practical information" section below.

(S/E) Continue along the dirt track and take the path on the left. At a place called Els Garrofers, look out for a beautiful stone shelter and note how the stones are held in place.

(1) At the intersection that appears shortly after, ignore a path on the left and turn right. Stay south-southeast on the main path and ignore the paths branching off to the sides. At a fork, keep left and you will quickly reach a new intersection.

(2) Then turn left.

(3) At the T-junction, turn right and ignore a turn-off on the right shortly afterwards. At the junction near the 562 sign, turn left.

(4) At the crossroads, take the first road on the left and continue straight ahead.

(5) At the foot of Altet de La Mosca, turn left (east). After about 25 m, you will reach an intersection at the foot of Altet de l'Escobella.

(6) Turn left to quickly climb to the summit.

(7) Retrace your steps.

(6) Turn left towards two large trees, then turn right, heading south, along the path.

(8) At the post, turn right towards Lo Torrent. Leave the summit of Peneys Roges on your left. Note the white and yellow markings along the route.

(9) At the intersection, turn right, heading due west. After about 200 m, you can bypass a very steep descent on the left. Find the path at the bottom and continue to an intersection.

(10) Ignore a path on the right and continue straight ahead (west). After about 150 m, cross a perpendicular path and continue straight ahead.

(11) At the next intersection, take the path on the right and enter a ravine.

(12) Pass between two walls (remains of a dam) and, immediately after, start climbing on the right. Continue on a very pretty path, heading northwest then northeast.

(13) At an intersection (cairn on the left), continue straight ahead on the path.

(14) At the next crossroads, turn right.

(15) At a fork (cairn), take the path on the left, which is slightly hidden behind a tree.

(2) At the junction you took at the start of the hike, follow the path you took on the way there in a north-north-westerly direction.

(1) Continue straight ahead (west) and retrace your steps to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The starting point is accessible by car from the A7 motorway. Take exit 482 for CV-827 Agost. Pass the petrol station and turn right into the car park, drive past Mesón Maigmo and take the road opposite towards the dam (Pantano de Tibi). At the stop sign, follow Pantano de Tibi, continue and look for a wide dirt road at the first bend in front of you: there is a tree with an illegible sign. Stop at the foot of the tree. (In any case, park carefully at the side of this dirt road to leave the way clear). Up close, you can make out "Coto de Caza" on the sign, which means hunting reserve. For information, it takes about 25 minutes to drive 27 kilometres from Alicante.

Do not go on this hike during hunting season.

The hike starts and ends at the same point to avoid the hunting reserve. The owners have put up numerous signs prohibiting entry and erected many fences. While the restrictions are clear on the way there (and the route avoids the reserve), on the way back it is less clear and many paths are now in this restricted area. If you take these paths, you may find yourself surrounded by fences with no way through. It is therefore essential to follow the route on both the outward and return journeys.

The paths are generally quite wide but unpaved and very stony, which can make progress a little difficult.
