Tibi Dam from Sabinar

This is a hilly hike that takes you to the Tibi Dam, one of the oldest dams in Europe (1580) still in operation, via a circular route through the surrounding hills. The route offers beautiful views of the coast at the start and finish, but overall, it is more typical of the "Sierra Alicantina" landscape. The route goes up and down quite a bit, but the slopes are not very steep or very long. It is therefore a relatively accessible hike for people with a minimum level of fitness.

Description of the walk

Park at the Altiplano Sabinar car park.

(S/E) Take the path that climbs north towards Pla del Totxar: signs indicate the direction. Keep going in this direction until you reach a T-junction with a cross-country track.

(1) Turn right and follow the signs for "Pla del Totxar" until you reach the "Enlace a PR®-CV 142" junction.

(2) Take the path on the left. This path becomes narrower and stonier and winds through the hills: there are no longer any markings on this path. Continue for about 1 km.

(3) Do not miss the fork on the left. The path descends towards the valley and crosses a slightly more wooded area.

(4) At the next crossroads, turn right onto a path that joins an old asphalt road.

(5) Follow it to the left and you will reach a small hamlet.

(6) Cross the bridge over the Río Monnegre (dam river) and go up the road through the hamlet.

(7) Leave the road by turning left at the "Xixona" sign and continue for just under a kilometre.

(8) Don't miss the turn-off to the left: the path is marked by an olive tree. Continue to the next crossroads.

(9) Continue straight ahead for about a hundred metres.

(10) Be careful: don't miss the path on the right that cuts across the fields to join another path a little higher up. Turn left onto this path and continue along the hillside until you reach the viewpoint overlooking the dam visible in the distance.

(11) Turn right through an old gate and follow the path downhill to a road. Follow this road, leaving the access to the Ermita Divina Pastora on your right.

(12) Cross the Carlos IV Bridge and then go back up the road. The climb is a bit steep until you reach the dam car park.

(13) Take the small yellow and white marked path that climbs to the right. This path is steep and goes up and down. It is perhaps the hardest part of the route, but it is worth it as it leads to the dam.

(14) Retrace your steps back to the car park and continue right along the road for about 300 metres.

(15) Leave the road and take the path on the left which climbs slightly and goes around a small peak on the left. Continue for about 2 km until you reach a crossroads.

(16) Don't miss the small path that climbs to the left towards Alt de Colomar. Continue to the next fork.

(17) Take the path that climbs to the right for about 200 m and then descends, sloping to the left.

(18) At the next junction, continue straight ahead to join a wider dirt track. Continue in the same direction and, before the climb, cut right to rejoin the outward route.

(4) Turn right and retrace your steps to return to the car park (S/E).
