Courbières Mountain and Pradiers from Rascoupet

A long and magnificent hike in the little Mongolia of Cézallier. Pastures as far as the eye can see, herds of Aubrac and Salers cows, burons (stone huts)... and the Monts du Cantal on the horizon. No technical difficulty, good trails or wide paths that are always well marked, with numerous ladders to cross barriers. The route is circular except for the section between Rascoupet and before Courbières, which is a round trip.

Description of the walk

Park at the hamlet of Rascoupet to the north-east of Landeyrat. There is no designated car park in the hamlet, but there is space to park a few cars near the rubbish bins.

(S/E) Head to the eastern end of the village and look for the Vaches Rouges du Tour du Cézallier markings at the start of a large path.

Section marked with Vaches Rouges signs for the Tour du Cézallier.

(1) Take this path which heads due east and climbs gently, offering a view of the hamlet and already of the Mont du Cantal to the west. After about 500 m, the path becomes more rough and turns south after 250 m.

(2) Turn sharply left into a field and continue eastwards to the gates.

(3) Go through the gates (they open easily, so make sure you close them behind you). Head towards the small Bois des Cayroux forest and walk along its right-hand side. The markings are now more visible on the forest fence. Go through another gate and you will come to a fork in the path.

(4) Continue straight ahead on the small road that descends due east until you reach the intersection with a path coming from the left, which will be the return route.

(5) Continue along the road on the right and head towards the hamlet of Courbières and the signpost.

Section marked with greenPR® "Montagne de Courbières" and red cows

(6) Turn left towards "Montagne de Courbières". After crossing a small bridge over the Courbières stream, the path, which is very pleasant and mostly through woodland (watch out for livestock and close the gates behind you), leads to Pradiers after about 2 km.

(7) Continue straight ahead and head for the signpost in front of the church on the main street.

(8) Turn left towards "Tour du Cézallier / Boutaresse". Pass the town hall on your left and continue to the next fork in the road about 150 m further on.

Part with greenPR® markings "Montagne de Courbières"

(9) Leave the Vaches Rouges markings and turn left towards "Montagne de Courbières". Very long and wide track with beautiful views of Pradiers and the Monts du Cantal. One kilometre after Pradiers, you will reach a fork.

(10) Turn right. Climb steadily and go around Montagne de Pradiers on the left. After about 3 km, the track comes to several enclosures.

(11) Leave the track and follow the greenPR® markings, which go around the enclosures on the right (ladder). The route is well marked through the pastures. Go around a wetland at the bottom of the valley, then climb more steeply, turning northwards along the side of the Montagne des Huides. After reaching the highest point of the hike at around 1,390 metres, the route turns sharply and then descends south-west towards Montagne de Courbières. Sometimes on the hillside, sometimes on the shoulder, pass above the burons (stone huts) of Courbières Hautes and then Bel-Air (there are numerous ladders above the fences). Turning increasingly southwards, pass above the Bois de Lorette, before first turning left then right, heading due east. Cross the Ruisseau de Monval and join a wide path (elevation 1187).

(12) Turn right, heading due south. The straight path, after crossing the hill, reaches a fork.

(13) Turn right and head for the crossroads you passed on the way there.

(5) Turn right and take the same path as on the way there to reach Rascoupet (S/E).

The route crosses meadows where herds graze. You have to watch out for bulls. It's not very reassuring. On the other hand, the path between the waterfall (at 5) and Pradiers is really very pleasant.

Magnificent hike through the mountain pastures
Many different flowers, rarely seen
However, we started from Courbières rather than Rascoupet and added the summit

Route with magnificent views under the sun and blue sky. Presence of peaceful herds. We shortened it by starting from Courbieres.

Magnificent hike!!! Started from Pradiers, without the section of the route to and from Rascoupet. No particular difficulties: clear and precise trail, no technical sections (except for crossing the barrier ^^). Spent a few hours in the middle of the mountain pastures, sometimes with no visible signs of civilisation: a wonderful experience and a highly recommended hike! Thank you for this route.

Also departing from Pradiers, which shortens the journey slightly and avoids a return trip.
Done in the rain and fog. Lack of signs and markings in several places.
Very wild overall.

This route can be shortened by avoiding the return trip from Rascoupet. Park at Courbières, head north and take the marked path that goes around La Garde de Pourpet to the north. At the end of this path, north of Pradiers, turn left onto the path that is circular and goes around Courbières mountain. At the end of the circular route, return to Courbières. This is approximately 14 km.

A magnificent route! I did it in sunny weather and was able to appreciate the immensity and beauty of the landscapes along this hike. It is not very difficult as there is little elevation gain, but it is a bit long. You therefore need to be in reasonably good physical condition. As for the directions, I got a little lost in the pastures on the side of Huides Mountain (No. 11 on the map). I went around the wetland on the right, when I should have gone around it on the left. But the good visibility allowed me to find the trail again.
I recommend this hike!
