This third stage will take you to the Fieschergletcher, which runs parallel to the Aletschgletcher. On the Aspi Titter suspension bridge, you will be impressed by the depth of the Weisswasser river gorges. This fairly technical end of the route ends in the beautiful village of Bellwad, which has preserved its traditional chalets.

Description of the walk

To make the description easier to follow, the following symbols are used:
Sign R: Yellow sign with a hiker pictogram.
Sign No. 39 or P39: Red and white multi-directional sign with a green No. 39 sticker.
The start of this hike is at the Märjelensee Gletscherstube.

(S) From the Märjelensee Gletscherstube, head back towards the track (sign No. 39).

(1) Heading north-east, follow this track to the far end of the Märjelen Stausee.

(2) As indicated by signpost P39, keep to the left. Begin the descent down a fairly steep couloir via a series of hairpin bends. Cross three streams before reaching a less steep path. Continuing north-east, follow the base of the Stock and reach a viewpoint overlooking the Fieschergletscher.

(3) Take in the view of what remains of this 16 km-long glacier, rankedsecond in the Alps. Heading south, follow this ridge until you reach signpost No. 39.

(4) Turn left towards the Burg moraine. After a few sections with fixed equipment, ladders and wooden steps, return to the Burghütte.

(5) After a break at this pleasant hut, reach a junction below the Berghaus.

(6) Keep heading south, continue the descent – which is again equipped with a few ladders – and arrive at a track marked with sign No. 39.

(7) Heading south, make your way towards the Aspi Titter suspension bridge.

(8) Cross the Aspi Titter suspension bridge, which spans the Weisswasser torrent at a height of 120 metres. In the middle of the bridge, you’ll be impressed by the gorges below. Take your time crossing, as the final ascent up the bridge is quite steep.

(9) Tackle a fairly gruelling climb up to the Obflie plateau. Adjust your pace on certain secured sections and long, steep metal staircases. You’ll reach a junction marked with sign No. 39, near a chalet.

(10) Heading south-east, follow the Obflieweg until you reach the Stollenstrasse.

(11) Take the Stollenstrasse until a sign marked ‘R’ directs you to take a shortcut on the right.

(12) Take this path across a meadow to rejoin Riederstrasse and enter the Ried district of Bellwald.

(13) As indicated by sign no. 39, follow the Wangweg towards the village centre. Walk through the village to reach the Bellwald cable car station.

(14) Turn north onto Bellwaldstrasse to reach today’s accommodation, the Hotel Bellwald (E).

A magnificent route between Bettmeralp and Platta, with a viewpoint overlooking the Aletsch Glacier. You can admire the Aletsch Glacier all the way to Konkordia Platz, where several glaciers converge. This phenomenon forms the mid-moraines – lines of pebbles and rocks in the middle of the ice – which are clearly visible on the Aletsch Glacier. Along the way, before the tunnel under the Tälligrat, you can also see the Fischergletscher, another glacier in a valley further to the east.

A circular walk starting from Bettmeralp. It passes through the village of Riederalp before climbing up to Rieder Furka. From this pass, you’ll descend through the beautiful Aletsch Forest to Silbersand. As you climb back up towards Alte Stafel, you’ll gradually come to see the Aletsch Glacier. At Moosfluh and along the ridge, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the glacier. To the south, you can admire the 4,000-metre peaks, from the Weismiess to the Weisshorn via the Matterhorn. The return to Bettmeralp takes you past the lakes of Blausee and Bettmersee.

The Riederhorn is a peak overlooking the village of Riederalp. From Bettmeralp, the route follows the Aletsch Promenade and then the UNESCO Promenade to reach Rieder Furka and Villa Cassel. The route continues with the ascent of the Riederhorn and follows the ridge. The return to Villa Cassel takes you through the Bettwald forest, which overlooks the Gibidum reservoir, a lake fed by the Aletsch Glacier.

This second stage passes through the Rieder Furka and Villa Cassel again. The trail then follows a moraine offering several views of the glacier. The climb to the Härdernagrat offers exceptional views of both the Aletsch Glacier and the Valais peaks rising to over 4,000 metres, including the Matterhorn. After HohBalm, the Aletsch Glacier remains your faithful companion before disappearing at the Märjelenseestube.

A Circular walk from Ried Morel (alternatively Morel or Riederalp) taking in an easy descent through woodland to glaciated rock scenery and the hanging bridge over the Massa which is the water flowing from the Aletsch Glacier. Then crossing peaceful alpine pastures to make the ascent up the steps to Hotel Belalp before dropping again on paths and roads to the dam at the end of Stausee Gibidum. The final section follows the scenic Massweg trail back to Reid Morel.

This stage is common to both the Walser Tour and the Valrando Mineral Tour. A few houses line this path in Freichi and then in Blatt. The Ofenhorn can be admired all the way to the Binntal Hütte. Although this is German-speaking territory, French is surprisingly the dominant language in this hut. The Binntal Hütte belongs to the Swiss Alpine Club: Delémont section.
