Description of the walk

Park at the National Trust Loweswater Car Park, also known as Maggie's Bridge.
This walk can be done in either direction.

(S/E) From the car park, take the path towards High Nook Farm. The path has recently been modified (spring 2022). Follow the signs carefully. You will need to cross the courtyard of High Nook Farm to take the path that leads straight ahead between the fenced fields.

(1) Continue along the path until you reach the middle of a valley where the path begins to become less visible.

(2) Follow this path as it turns right to cross Highnook Beck. There is a small bridge to cross. Continue along the path, which is now very visible. This path, also known as Corpse Road, was once used to transport the dead from one village to another. The path passes over Holme Wood before turning towards the fields.

(3) After a left turn to cross Holme Beck, turn right and continue straight ahead on this path overlooking Loweswater. There is a nice bench on the path where you can stop and enjoy the view.

(4) Go through the gate and continue straight ahead on the wide path. The stone wall should be on your right.

(5) Turn right at the gate in the stone wall. The gate is clearly visible. Continue along this path (the stone wall should be on your right) until you reach a tarmac road at Iredale Place.

(6) Turn right and continue along this tarmac road until you reach Jenkinson Place. Pass the houses and take the path (after the gate) that goes straight across the fields. Continue straight ahead until you reach another tarmac road at Hudson Place.

(7) At the tarmac road, turn right to pass the farm, then left to take the fenced path (follow the signs at the farm). Continue straight ahead on this path until you reach the gate leading into Holme Wood.

(8) This walk follows the path along the lake, but there are plenty of other paths through Holme Wood, all of which lead to the gate at Watergate Farm. To see Holme Force waterfall, take the path that climbs through the woods. Follow the path along the lake to the gate at Watergate Farm.

(9) From Watergate Farm, follow the path below the lake to the car park (S/E).

Practical information

Please note: there may be cows and sheep in some fields. Keep your dog on a lead if there are animals. High Nook Farm and Hudson Place are working farms with animals sometimes roaming freely (farm dogs, geese, chickens). Keep your dog on a lead when crossing these farms.
There are no water points, but there are many small streams for dogs.
The trail can be very muddy in wet weather.
In summer, be aware of green algae that may be present in Loweswater Lake.
