Mellbreak Summit

Circular walk to Mellbreak summit with some scrambling. Amazing views from the top and along the shore of Crummock water. This is a dog-friendly walk.

Description of the walk

Start: Lanthwaite Wood National Trust car park, Cockermouth (CA13 9UY) Grid ref. NY 148 214

(S/E) Exit the car park and take left on the main road. Continue walking towards Loweswater village (South- West).

(1) After 710m, at the road junction with the telephone box, take left on the smaller road. Continue straight until reaching a small intersection of roads (with the church at the corner, right hand side). Continue straight (South) passing below the garden of the Kirkstile Inn pub.

(2) Cross church bridge and continue straight towards Kirkgate farm. Pass the farm and continue on the main path until reaching an intersection of paths after the earthwork.

(3) Leave the main path to take the smaller path going straight through the forest and towards White Crag. Continue going up until reaching White Crag.

(4) At White Crag, continue South going up towards Mellbreak using the main path. Be careful There is a bit of scrambling and some loose rocks.

(5) Once at the top of Mellbreak, go straight following the path going down towards Black Beck river.

(6) At the bottom and intersection with a bigger path, take left to continue East going down now towards Crummock water shore. Black beck should be on your right-hand side. Continue straight until reaching Crummock water shore.

(7) Take left and walk along Crummock Water shore for 3.6 Km until reaching Lanthwaite Wood.

(8) Take left to walk through the woods until you reach the car park and start of the walk. (S/E)

Terrain: Forest track, rocky path. Be careful there are some scrambling parts between White Crag and Mellbreak summits with loose rock.

Dog friendly: Yes, be careful during the scrambling section. Also can have sheep.
