Park at the side of the D91 between the sign for the hamlet of La Vallée and the speed camera.
(S/E) Walk down the road for a few metres to join the footpath leading to the Petit Moulin (do not approach the mill via the road – it is dangerous!).
(1) At the Petit Moulin, cross the stream and follow the path that leads to the dyke enclosing the Étang de Cernay and on to the Monument Pelouse. It is also possible not to cross the stream and to follow one of the parallel paths that lead to the dyke (switch routes on the way back).
(2) Continue straight ahead on the path that runs alongside the pond and ignore a path that climbs immediately to the right. Walk alongside the pond on your left; this section is often damp, or even flooded, but there is a track running parallel above the path that allows you to pass without any problems.
This path is a nature trail (blue markings in very poor condition) featuring numerous information boards on the flora and geology. Stay on this path (do not take the tracks on the right that climb up to the ridge, nor the path on the left that crosses the river).
(3) At the corner of the wall, take the path that climbs diagonally to the right and leads to a climbing site (do not continue along the path that runs alongside the wall, as you will be entering private property). Continue climbing north-west, following the GR®1C. Leave the GR® when it branches off to the right and, after a few metres, join the cycle path.
(4) Follow the cycle path to the right (north-north-east). Stay on the cycle path, which winds for about 500 m before straightening out. Pass a junction with a path running perpendicular to the cycle path.
(5) A little further on, take the unmarked path on the right which cuts diagonally across the cycle path.
(6) After about 200 m, a track on the left leads to the wooden steps leading up to the quarries (geology information board). Head to the back of the quarry towards the quarry face and follow the path that runs along the back of the quarry and then joins thesecond quarry (numerous information boards). Head to the right to leave the quarry via a wide path.
After leaving the quarries, turn left (north-north-east) onto a stony forest track.
(7) At the junction, rejoin the cycle path and follow it to the right. Cross the bridge over a seasonal stream. Take thesecond path on the right.
(8) After about 150 m, join the GR®1C and follow it to the right at a sharp angle. The GR® now goes round an old quarry. It is also possible to cross the quarry (blue markings) but the exit is very steep.
After the quarry, head left and continue on the GR®, which soon veers right (south-east). After a descent, a crossing over a seasonal stream and then an ascent, the GR® becomes flat and wider. After about 700 m (around 12 minutes), theGR® bends to the right at a signpost marking the “Coude du Ru des Vaux”. A little further on, you can see Cernay church on the left, on the other side of the valley. Continue along the GR® which runs along the edge of the plateau for 700 m. Below, you can see the path that leads to the pond.
(9) At the next junction, turn sharply left onto this path and head down to the Monument Pelouze.
(2) Turn right onto the embankment. Note the ponds and the spillway. After the stream, take the path on the left, then turn right and join a track. Ignore this and continue along the track to the left to reach the Petit Moulin museum. You can walk behind the small mill (with a view of the mill’s mechanism) to see other buildings and the information panels.
(1) Continue along the path back to the car park, retracing your steps from the outward journey (S/E).
