Description of the walk

Head to Castellet Saint-Cassien, located in the commune of Val-de-Chalvagne (04320).
Park in the designated area near the castle, flanked by two round towers dating from the 17th century. A car park, information boards and a pleasant rest area are available for walkers.

(S/E) Walk along the field to the right of the town hall and turn right at the signpost for Amirat. After about thirty metres, the start of the path appears. Follow it until you reach a short tarmac section. Markings: white and red. Continue straight on along the uphill wooded path to reach the hamlet of Ubac d’Amirat.

(1) Walk alongside the green metal railing and pass between the two buildings. Cross the tarmac road (marker 49, signpostedGR®4). Turn slightly left onto the ascending track. Join a cross-country track on the ridge.

(2) Turn left at this crossroads and continue to the electricity pylon. Go round it to the right. This clearly visible, unmarked section of the path begins on the right in a beautiful pine forest. From this point, take care, but the path is well-marked and follows the ridge line as closely as possible. Occasionally, a cairn marks the path.

(3) At the 1194m summit, stay on the ridge line. The mobile app is a useful aid for this route. Continue along the ridge line. At the 1278m summit, veer slightly left; then at the 1290m summit, the descending path is wider. You will emerge onto a track suitable for vehicles.

(4) At this fine cairn by the edge of the forest track, turn right for about twenty metres to reach a crossroads of paths. Turn left and follow the descending path

(5) At the shoulder, turn left at this junction of the path and track towards the Col du Trébuchet, altitude 1141 m. Marker 75.

(6) Turn left and continue along the tarmac road, the D10, until the next hairpin bend. There is road traffic, so proceed with caution.

(7) At this bend, continue straight on along this very stony track. This is the least pleasant section due to the ground conditions and the lack of woodland for part of the climb. You will reach a clearing with a large junction of tracks and a cairn on a rock.

(8) Turn slightly left and continue along this dry path lined with boxwood. Faded yellow markings are sometimes visible.

(9) At the clearing, turn left before the electricity pylon, following red and white markings. Continue along this beautiful forest track, the ground covered in pine needles. The track deteriorates and becomes a footpath. You can see Castellet Saint-Cassien nearby. Follow this long descending path which leads to a tarmac section.

(10) Turn right and head for the car park at Castellet Saint-Cassien (S/E).

Red and white markings continue as far as the hamlet of L'Ubac d'Amirat.
No water along the route.

The mobile app will be a very welcome bonus.

Hiking boots and walking poles recommended.

Worth a visit

The friendly staff at the town hall, open on Tuesdays from 2pm to 5pm and located next to the church, will open this religious building on request so you can view the magnificent stained-glass windows created by master glassmaker Gérard Peinado, as well as the restoration work carried out in 2019.

It has to be said that the path between 2 and 4 wasn’t marked at all. A rainy spring, tall grass and few visitors do nothing to reveal the route, which is more like an animal track than a recognisable (and reassuring!) path. But I knew what I was getting into – GPS is our friend – and I hadn’t downloaded the GPX track.
We came across three or four hunting hides. It’s likely that only the hunters maintain this ghost trail to some extent.
Ah! The logging site. Impressive and educational! It delighted our grandson (aged 11), who was able to get up close and touch the enormous skidder parked there.
At point 4, it looks as though the cairn has been dismantled, as I couldn’t see anything.
All in all, the place is extraordinary. You read books describing places like this, and one day you see them ‘in the flesh’.
And not even far from home!!

A wonderful discovery, especially in autumn. I can confirm that between landmarks 2 and 4 (Col d'Avenos), it is best to have a GPS, as the trail is relatively poorly marked at this time of year. A nasty surprise between landmarks 7 and 10: a huge amount of felled timber was blocking the path, making it difficult for us to progress along the trail (GR4), where large ruts caused by very heavy cutting machinery made it difficult to move forward. Fortunately, it hadn't rained beforehand, otherwise it would have been impossible.

A route that’s out of the ordinary.
An interesting section through the woods along this unmarked path.
Two cairns added and some light clearing carried out near the hamlet known as "Le Pestré".
Without the trail, you wouldn’t imagine this path even existed.
Plan to stop for lunch at the Col de Trébuchet, which is clear and sunny.

A pleasant route. As it’s wooded for most of the way, we didn’t suffer too much from the sun in July 🙂
Really lovely scenery when you reach the highest point.
Not very busy, a walk in harmony with nature.
Be careful, the unmarked paths are hard to spot in places; a GPS is a great help!

Hello,
A lovely, not very long walk; my device says 12 km.
I really enjoyed the unobstructed view from the Col du Trébuchet and the hamlet of Castellet Saint-Cassien.
This walk is very similar to “The Col du Trébuchet from Amirat” but with the added bonus of the unmarked section. That adds a bit of a “spark”!
