Le Mas - Amirat

The first stage of the journey through the Haut Estéron region: the landscapes are magnificent and the area extremely wild; we didn’t come across a single other hiker. The trails are varied and well-marked. We’ll set off from the village of Le Mas to reach Amirat (lodge) via the Charamel mountain and the village of Les Mujouls.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Circular route in the Haut-Estéron region

Description of the walk

Park in the visitor car park, next to the church at Le Mas.

(S) Take the path signposted with a sign: direction Les Mujouls CollonguesGR®4. Follow the yellow markings to the ridge of the Charamel mountain. Reach the junction with theGR®4.

(1) Turn left onto it and you’ll soon reach a track. Leave theGR® and turn right onto this track, passing the Adom hut.
Continue the gentle descent due west into the Adom valley and rejoin theGR® after crossing a small stream.

(2) Climb slightly before descending steeply again along a somewhat steep path to a track. Cross it to rejoin it a little further down below.
Caution: the descent is very steep and even dangerous; it is best to take the track on the right, follow the circular route and, after the hairpin bend to the left, rejoin theGR®4at a green barrier.
Then take the path just to the left of the track to reach the footbridge over the Estéron.

(3) Continue along the track; at marker 63, leave theGR® and head left. At the Mamelle crossroads, turn right to rejoin the GR®. Continue left to enter and cross the hamlet of Les Peirouals.

(4) Head north on theGR® and climb steeply to the right up to the village of Les Mujouls.

(5) Leave the village via the main road D 85 and follow it. At the first junction, turn right, then a few metres further on, turn left. You will then reach the junction ofthe GR®510and theGR®4

(6) Turn left onto theGR®510: signposted Amirat Les Agots (GR®510). Follow this flat, wooded path until you reach marker 54, where you’ll see the Amirat Les Agots sign.

(7) Turn onto the small path leading down to the right, cross the stream and head back up to the road leading to the entrance of the village of Amirat (E).

Notes

Please note: do remember to book your overnight stay at the Amirat lodge via the town hall (Communal Lodge)

(3) A little further on, at marker No. 63, if you want to avoid a kilometre of track, leave the track to the left then turn right at the first junction to rejoin the track and theGR®4.

(5) At Les Mujouls, I chose to leave the village via the D85 road to reach theGR®510more quickly; it is possible to avoid this section of road by heading to Collongues and then theGR®510, but there is still a section of road, albeit a slightly shorter one.
Another option: At marker 63, head due east towards marker 68 then 41, then head north towards Saint-Jeannet and then Amirat. This option avoids the road section and the climb to the village of Les Mujouls, but has the disadvantage of covering a small part of the next day’s route.

(7) Please note: in June 2019, this path was closed due to the poor condition of the culvert over the stream below; however, I chose to take it anyway and this tiny stream presents no difficulty at this time of year.
