Description of the walk

Set off from Le Plan on the outskirts of Entrevaux towards Digne. Cross the railway line and take the first road on the left. Go round a few bends and turn left again. Do not go all the way to Le Plan; you will see theGR® markings leading up to the end of the road. Park on the flat area above on the right.

(S/E) From the car park, do not take the track opposite; follow theGR® above the car park. The path is marked in red and white. No particular difficulty.

(1) After 300 m, turn right and continue climbing.

(2) Join the main track and head up to the right.

(3) Further up, 150 m past the hamlet of La Colle, which consists of a few houses, leave the track and head down to the left.

(4) You’ll reach a water source; continue further up to enter the pine forest, then higher up into the beech forest. Pass in front of the Oratoire Saint-Joseph. No difficulty: theGR® remains signposted.

(5) Reach the junction with a track on the right; a signpost indicates the direction. Continue straight ahead to the Col de Saint-Jeannet, which marks the end of the climb.
During this climb, you can admire the views of the Grand Coyer and Mont Saint Honorat.

(6) From this pass, there is less than a kilometre of gentle descent remaining. Before you arrive, pass by the miraculous fountain and you will see the buildings of Saint-Jean du Désert.

(7) From the Saint-Jean du Désert Chapel, turn back and follow the same path back to (S/E).

Water stop before arriving at Saint-Jean du Désert at the beautiful miraculous spring.

Worth a visit

The Chapel of Saint-Jean du Désert is closed: the only way to see it is to take part in the Saint John’s Day festival and the penitents’ procession, which sets off from Entrevaux Cathedral and heads to Saint-Jean du Désert. Enjoy a meal together and spend the night there for a pleasant experience.

Visit to the citadel of Entrevaux.

A small correction regarding point 3
At the hamlet of La Colle (150m before point 3), follow the GR (marked in red and white) which heads off to the left rather than continuing straight on, as there are no signs to rejoin the GR at point 3 and the GR is more pleasant.

A lovely walk through a beautiful beech forest; you just need to carry on to the Saint Jean du Désert chapel, as the route ends about 1 km before it.

A very pleasant route through a beech forest in spring and no doubt in autumn too.
It’s a shame you can’t get to the small window of the chapel to look inside.
At the Col St Jean, 1 km from the chapel, there is a pleasant spot for a picnic.

A route where you won’t get bored for a moment; mostly shaded by trees, with plenty of water points and a sheltered picnic table at St Jean Chapel – I really enjoyed this walk.
An added bonus is the village of Entrevaux, fortified by Vauban, which is well worth a visit.
