The Pédaoucats trails

Get your calves ready and set off to explore this colourful route. The route starts on an old path, once widely used by farmers on their way to the market in a village higher up. You then alternate between woods and small roads, but one thing is certain: you will be immersed in nature.
ThePR® -labelled route is signposted with the famous yellow colour code.

Description of the walk

Park in the Betplan town hall car park, as the church is located on the other side of the D38 road.

(S/E) Take the D286 and leave the town hall on your right. Quickly take a path that climbs up to the left after a house. Follow this path, which climbs through the forest and then continues to the road.

(1) Return to the D286 and follow it to the left for about 300 metres.

(2) Then turn right into a dead-end road. Turn right at the corner of a building and go down a grassy path. Enjoy the view of the Pyrenees on a clear day.

(3) At the bottom of the path, follow a small road to the left. Pass the hamlet of Pédaucat and continue along a path that runs alongside meadows (note an abandoned vineyard on the left). Enter a wood. Ignore a path on the left and continue through the wood.

(4) At the intersection in a small clearing (panoramic view of the Pyrenees), turn right. Descend into the woods and continue between meadows. Once again, the Pyrenees rise up straight ahead on the horizon.

(5) Pass the house of L'Arnau (an old hamlet) and follow the road downhill with a few bends.

(6) At the bottom, at the T-junction, turn left and cross the hamlet of Bourdillou. Stay on this road until you reach the town hall (the small courtyard on the side of the town hall was the old school) and return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Worth a visit

Betplan Castle: home of the Monlezun family, the first written record of which dates back to 1388. The lineage continued until the Revolution. Its current construction was completed in the 17th century. Today it is privately owned and is the subject of archaeological research in an attempt to unravel its mysteries. It is the pride of the people of Betplan thanks to its history and all the legends that have inspired the children of the village for generations.

Saint Laurent Church: above the door, you can still see a date, 1734, and a few letters, Lamarque de Jegun, the mason who built the castle's carriage house. The unusual bell tower wall has two decorated bells. As noon approaches, take a closer look: it is still the traditional pendulum that makes them ring.

A very pleasant hike through woods, trails and paved paths, "far from everything" (which is also what I'm looking for). Beautiful views of the open horizon are rare.
It's true that there are a few fairly steep climbs, but they're not very long. The route is fairly easy to follow; a few yellow markings help you stay on track.
Regarding the dogs mentioned in other messages, they belong to the owners of a lodge on the edge of the path. It's true that they are quite impressive, but you can see that they are used to seeing people passing by: they come towards you barking, quickly calm down, come to "sniff" you and leave you alone. I can confirm that they are not vicious. I met the owners later on my way, who are helpful and kind people: one of the dogs is called Venise. They advised me to call her name to make her leave.
A slight variation, if you haven't had enough, at stage (6), instead of turning left towards Betplan, turn right onto the tarmac road. 100 metres further on, you will see a green electricity meter box. At this point, take the grassy path that climbs steeply for about 10 minutes. You have already taken this path in the other direction. You will arrive in front of the building mentioned in step (2). You will then need to take the road on the left and... follow the same route in reverse to return to the starting point.
A great outing that I will do again.

A short, well-marked walk
We did indeed encounter two barking dogs, which were impressive but not really aggressive.

A very pleasant walk, if you forget the moment when my dog was attacked without reason and without warning by the two dogs mentioned in the previous comments! The owner was very accommodating.

It's a shame because I really enjoyed it, but I won't be doing it again.

A really nice walk in the quiet woods with beautiful panoramic views on the way back. The only downside was that we passed a house where two dogs were running loose and came towards us barking. It gave us a bit of a fright, but we continued on our way without any problems.

Hello and thank you to the author for this walk taken yesterday.
I didn't have much time, but I managed to complete this walk in an hour and a half, unfortunately in overcast weather.
But it was a pleasant route. Nice and varied views. Good climbs, I slept well that night.

A very pleasant, bucolic walk in the hills of Gers, well marked and without any particular difficulty. A good warm-up with some nice little climbs...

Beautiful circular route, varied landscape and well-shaded trail for most of the route. Good climb at the start.
