The ruins of the Château des Beurons and the Chêne Mademoiselle

Through the fields and villages of the Mantois region and the eastern part of the Rosny Forest, this route takes you to discover ruins surprisingly located in the middle of the forest and a picturesque oak tree. The churches of Jouy-Mauvoisin and Petit Perdreauville, a manor house, a few beautiful farmhouses and a small heritage site linked to water complete the picture.

Description of the walk

Start at Place de la Mairie in Jouy-Mauvoisin (accessible from exit 13 "Mantes-Ouest" on the A13 motorway). There are three parking options:
- In the small car park opposite the school and along the small cemetery next to the church (7 spaces available).
- In the adjacent streets.
- In the large car park of the village hall (on the left just before the church when coming from Mantes on the D110).

No signposts

(S/E) Follow Rue de la Fontaine, pass the town hall and ignore Rue des Cornouillers on your right (this will be the way back). Continue along Rue de la Fontaine, ignoring two small streets on the left. At a three-way junction (no. 23 opposite), turn right, staying on the same street. Pass a wash house on the left and you will come to the fountain at the bottom.

(1) Leave the fountain on your right and go up opposite via Chemin de la Croix Saint-Nicolas. At the fork, turn left and continue uphill. At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead (west-northwest) on a farm track. When you reach an isolated house, continue in the same direction and pass a yellow sign with two sides. Walk about 100 metres through the Bois des Tuileries (a small section of the Rosny Forest; sign) and ignore a path on the right.

(2) At the edge of the woods, head west, slightly downhill between the fields. Stay on the edge of the woods on your right and ignore the perpendicular paths. After passing between the fields again, you will come to a crossroads (stunted hedge on the left).

Red and white markings (rare and faded)

(3) Turn left onto a grassy path, follow the hedge on your right (look for a signpost) and climb up towards a large building. Ignore the path leading off to the left into the fields, follow the wall of the property on your left and descend to the Church of Saint-Martin. Finish the steep descent on the tarmac road. At the corner of the cemetery, cross a small road and go up opposite on a path between the fields. At the end, follow the path on the left for about 50 metres with a hedge of trees on your right.

No signposts
Although you are supposed to follow theGR®26to Apremont, there are no markings except at the very beginning and end of this section (as of February 2017).

(4) At the crossroads, turn right and walk along a farm on your right. At the end of the buildings, continue straight ahead on a grassy path downhill and walk along horse pastures on your left. Turn right at the same time as the path, keep a hedge on your right and continue downhill. At a fork, turn right and continue on flat ground at the edge of a fenced wood. Head northwest towards the bottom of Ravin Gabelle (chalky field on the left), enter the undergrowth and pass under the railway bridge. Then descend through the undergrowth and along the edge of the field on your right.

(5) At the T-junction (sign saying "Interdit aux véhicules à moteur" [No motor vehicles]), turn right and go up a stony path. Then walk along the flat or slightly downhill, along the edge of the woods and then below the railway line (on the right-hand side). Follow a hedge of trees on your left and, at the end of it, note the Manoir d'Apremont some distance below on your left. Go through a forest gate, turn left onto a road and immediately turn right into Rue de Beauvoyer (ignore the red and white signpost indicating to turn left into Rue du Petit Clos).

Red and white signposting

(6) At the three-way junction, follow Chemin des Beurons to the right and climb into the forest. Pass the foot of a transmitter on the right and arrive at a crossroads at Pont du Beauvoyer.

Yellow signposts

Leave theGR® trail opposite and take the bridge over the railway line on the right. Continue uphill, pass a forest barrier and then a sign for "Forêt de Rosny". At a fork, take the right-hand path (east), which is flat.

Red and white markings

(7) At the next crossroads (signpost), go a few metres to the right until you reach the Chêne Mademoiselle (information sign). Retrace your steps.

(7) Continue west (right when coming from the oak tree) towards the ruins of Beuron. At the intersection with a path coming from the right, find the access to the ruins of the Château des Beurons on the left (large clearing, information signs).

Yellow markings + yellow signs

(8) Follow the botanical trail on the right, marked with signs indicating the names of certain trees and other plants. The trail forms a counterclockwise loop, partly in the undergrowth and partly in the clearing (indicative route on the map). North of the ruins, ignore a path that descends to the right but note the viewpoint between the trees over the Seine Valley.

Red and white markings

(8) At the edge of the clearing, turn left (east) onto Chemin des Allées des Beurons à Mantes towards Jouy-Mauvoisin (sign). Stay on the main path, which is marked, and ignore all side paths. Towards the end, the path becomes narrower and more winding and is called Chemin des Fourneaux. At a fork (information sign with map), turn right, go through a forest gate, leave the forest and go up a field path with a hedge on your left. At the end of this path (view of the Seine Valley on your left), ignore a path on the left and continue east-southeast on a farm track.

No signposts

(9) At the crossroads, take the second path on the right, the Sente des Ruelles (chicane), and walk alongside the houses on your right. When you reach the tarmac, look for the Sente des Petits Noyers on your left and go down this steep path (not shown on the map). You will come out onto Rue des Bertins. Cross Rue de la Vallée and go up Rue des Cornouillers (dead end). At the top, go around a large building on the right and continue along Rue des Cornouillers. At the end, turn left and you will immediately come back to Place de la Mairie (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots are recommended, although the paths are generally in good condition. However, there are a few steep slopes, both uphill and downhill, which have led to this short hike being rated as moderately difficult.

No drinking water available along the route. The beautiful, wide clearing around the ruins of the Château des Beurons is a great place to stop for a break or a picnic.

N.B. From October to February, avoid Fridays, which are big game hunting days.

A 1:25,000 map is essential (at least the one accompanying this description).

Variations:
- For a loop of about 5 km - At the crossroads (3), turn right (north), follow the forest on your left and then enter the forest to reach the Chêne Mademoiselle and the crossroads in the Bois des Beurons (7).
- At the castle ruins - The route through the clearing and along the botanical trail can of course be modified according to your inspiration and the time you have available.
- To avoid the last steep descent - After (9), at the end of the Sente des Ruelles, continue straight ahead on the street of the same name. At the end, turn left and find the fountain (1). Then return to the starting point by the same route as on the way there.

Hike completed by the author on 20 February 2017.

Worth a visit

- Sainte-Foy Church (12th-16th century), opposite the Jouy-Mauvoisin school (S/E).
- Washing place (19th century) in front (1).
- Fountain (1).
- Saint-Martin Church (16th-20th centuries), between (1) and (3). In the adjoining cemetery, the graves of two British airmen who died in June 1940 at the ages of 21 and 26, respectively.
- Apremont Manor (15th-16th centuries), clearly visible from the road in front (6).
- Chêne Mademoiselle (7). According to legend, it was planted by the daughter of Sully, Henry IV's minister, who owned the Rosny Forest at the time.
- Ruins of the Château des Beurons (17th century) (8). Not particularly spectacular in themselves, these ruins are remarkable for their location in the middle of the forest.
- Botanical trail (8).
- Views of the Seine Valley.

Some information needs to be updated, particularly regarding the mademoiselle oak, which is in fact a dead tree.

A really enjoyable and varied hike. Lots of beautiful spots and stunning views.
A slight difficulty at the very end of the route where the description is unclear, but you can find your way.
Definitely worth doing.

An amazing, varied, hilly route so close to a motorway. A very pleasant route that is very well described.

We left Rosny station and started the hike in Apremont after completing the "country loop around the Taupe valley" trail, which makes for a great day-long hike.
It was a hilly hike on good paths under a warm sun, which was pleasant in the woods but much less so when crossing the fields.
The Mademoiselle oak tree is impressive even though it is dead, but little remains of the Château des Beurons. The ruins now house beehives.
For your information, the two cemeteries (Jouy-Mauvoisin and Saint Martin church) have a water source.

Thanks to Netra for this hike.
We extended it a little. After the Sevestre farm, at the bottom of the path, instead of heading towards point 5:

  • We went up to the left towards "La butte".
  • There, we crossed the railway line via the bridge
  • Then we followed the path overlooking the Taupe valley on the left.
  • We crossed the GR26 almost at point 5 and climbed (quite steeply) towards La Belle Côte
  • There, we turned right onto the D114 for 100 metres
  • We turned right onto the GR26, which took us to Apremont, passing by its wash house
  • We rejoined the original route at point 6.

11 km in total, with beautiful scenery as a bonus.

Note: the Mademoiselle oak tree no longer has any leaves. It has died.

A very pleasant walk in a beautiful, uncrowded setting.
The route alternates between forest, clearings and fields where flowers abound at this time of year.
The oak tree is certainly dead but majestic.
Thanks also to the author for the very accurate description.
An easy hike for everyone.
Go there with your eyes closed.

A favourite hike that I am organising on Friday 29 March to share this varied and beautiful route. You could be in a small mountain village when you pass through Apremont. Just 10 km from Mantes la Jolie, I am amazed to find such beautiful trails. A big thank you to our guide for his kindness.

Very good description, no problem finding your way (NB: the sign mentioned in point 5 seems to have disappeared).
An easy, very pleasant and varied walk: fields, forest, pretty views. Unfortunately, the "Chêne Mademoiselle" oak tree does not seem to be in the best of health...
We saw a deer running and picked lots of blackberries!
