Description of the walk

Access: On the D519 towards Grenoble between Saint-Barthélémy-de-Beaurepaire and the roundabout in the Le Contant district, Enclave de Penol. About 500 m after the last house heading towards Grenoble, take the path on the right, about 1 km before the roundabout. Park on the right or left at the junction along the path near the Pont du Rosier.

(S/E) Head west along the edge of the woods. (To visit the fountains, take the paths on the right). Continue along the main path. Cross the Leat de la Tanche via a small wooden bridge and continue straight on, skirting the forest. The path turns left by 90°. You will then reach the Ruisseau La Raille.

(1) Follow it to the left (just before turning left, you can continue straight on to see part of the network of fountains), and after a straight stretch, you’ll reach a bridge over the stream.

(2) Cross it to the right, then turn left at the next junction onto Chemin de la Prairie to reach the D73 at the Baume junction.

(3) Go under the D73 bridge and head towards Beaufort. Take thefirst path that climbs to the right towards the woods. Continue; the path curves to the right towards the houses, then you’ll reach a three-way junction.

(4) Turn right onto the path. Pass Combe Bernard and, at the T-junction, turn right. Turn left with the path and head slightly downhill to reach a small wood.

(5) Turn right to go round the woods. At the junction, turn left. You’ll come out onto a road (Chemin des Galises) and follow it to the left for about 40 metres.

(6) Take the path on the right (Chemin de la Plaine) and walk alongside a copse. Pass Combe Moussin, turn right and walk alongside the Goutoule canal, which soon bends at a 90° angle.

(7) Turn right and stay along the edge of the Goutoule, which soon turns left. Reach a road and follow it to the right to join the D73.

(8) Cross it carefully and continue straight ahead into the Plaine du Grand Champlard. Walk past the houses in Champinet before reaching the crossroads of the path on the edge of the woods at Grand Champlard.

(9) Turn right onto it and follow a virtually straight stretch to reach the Chemin des Fourches.

(10) Turn left onto it; after the hamlet of La Prairie, you’ll reach the Leat de la Cour. Follow it for a few metres, then turn right to quickly reach the junction you passed on the way out.

(1) Turn left and follow the route taken on the way out to return to the car park near the Pont du Rosier (S/E).

To make the most of the day, we set off from Marcollin towards Les Fontaines and then Beaufort.
But honestly, as our destination was Les Fontaines... what a disappointment: NOTHING TO SEE. Otherwise, you’d have to follow a path through an area completely overgrown with brambles and fallen, rotten trees with no visibility (and at this time of year, the trees aren’t even in leaf). It really is a nature reserve best left alone, and one you shouldn’t venture into.
Thanks anyway to the author, as the site may have been different when they wrote their description.

An easy, pleasant walk for a leisurely stroll; one section of the path is a bit grassy....

Struggled to find the starting point... Not recognised by my satnav
Stumbled across a small track accessible by car, which turned out to be the start of the walk
A lovely walk... Very pleasant, and personally we really like the fields of maize and sunflowers

Hello, it’s clear that I hadn’t realised we also needed to take the paths leading into the Fontaines area. I’ve corrected both the description and the title, provided the site accepts the changes.
In any case, it is difficult to plan a hike of average length in kilometres using only the Fontaines de Beaufort.
In that case, you should have stopped near point 1.
I hope you enjoyed these fountains.
Thank you for your comments, which have enabled me to correct my text.

Kind regards
Claudius.

We had chosen to go on this walk thinking we would be visiting the sensitive area around the Beaufort fountains, which we knew nothing about. We are very disappointed because the route does not go through the protected path. Why make us park in a field alongside a farm track when there is a car park provided specifically for visiting the site? Why make us walk along a path bordering a maize field there and back when a path marked in yellow on the information board at the site’s car park offers a much more pleasant detour? As for us, having arrived at 6, we’d had enough of the maize and sunflower fields. We headed straight back to 10, then, after reading the information board, we visited the wetland, which was much more pleasant than the maize fields.

A lovely walk with not much road and plenty of beautiful paths. We took a wrong turn before reaching point 9 – we took the first path on the right – and then we rejoined the route at point 10, which added an extra kilometre to the walk.
