The cliffs of Plouha

This hike can be split into two parts: a 9 km loop to the north-west, which includes Bonaparte Beach, and a second 6.5 km loop to the south, which offers views of Pointe de Plouha.
Both loops follow theGR®34coastal path and include some ascents and descents that may be difficult for inexperienced hikers.

Description of the walk

Gwin Zégal car park.

(S/E) Leave the car park and walk north. The path leads to the Port of Gwin Zégal (off the route).

(1) Take the coastal path on the left: theGR®34(red and white markings). Follow it to Bonaparte Beach.

(2) The path turns right and begins a fairly steep descent.

(3) Cross the access road to Port Moguer and continue along the path directly opposite. After a few metres, take the path on the right. It starts with a gentle slope that becomes steeper after about 100 metres. The path ends at a tarmac road, which you follow for 50 metres.

(4) After a right-hand bend, continue straight ahead, leaving a road on your left. The road becomes a path again until you reach a viewpoint overlooking the coast. The path is paved for 50 m, then turn right onto the path that makes a hairpin bend to the left. Begin the descent towards Bonaparte Beach. (See the related website below).

(5) At the car park, take the path on the right going uphill, which runs alongside the road for a while, then at a path junction, continue on the left (at this point, theGR® 34 trail branches off to the right). Immediately after, take the path on the right. You will arrive at a place called Keruzeau. When you reach the road, turn left. At the end of the road, at a place called Le Pradou, turn left.

(6) On the right-hand side is the Saint-Samson Chapel. Continue to a crossroads. Take the path opposite, slightly to the left, then after a few hundred metres, go straight ahead, slightly to the right. The path is wide and stony.

(7) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead, leaving the calvary on your right. The wide path leads to a paved road.

(8) At a right-hand bend, continue straight ahead along a grassy path. Go around a group of houses to reach a road, which you take by turning left. Continue along this road.

(9) The road ends at a property numbered 14. At the entrance to the property, take a small path on the right that runs alongside a stone wall. The path ends on the road to Port Moguer.

(3) You can go down to the slipway and take the footbridge to the left of the small house to admire the landscape.
Take the same route as on the way there. The climb is steep.

(1) As mentioned in the introduction, you can return to the car park or continue slightly to the left and do the second loop of the circuit.

(10) From the road, take the path on the right. You will arrive at the Beg Hastel car park on the right. Continue along the path, always taking the left-hand branch.

(11) At a hairpin bend, follow the path on the left and continue along it, always taking the left-hand path when there is another option.

(12) The path arrives at Pointe de Plouha, which offers a panoramic view of Saint-Brieuc Bay and, on the horizon to the east, the Gulf of Saint-Malo and the Emerald Coast.

Continue along the coastal path, which is also theGR®34.

(13). When you reach a road, turn right. Leave theGR®34, which follows the road to the left (off the route). This leads to Palus Beach.
The path leads to Port Logot. Continue along the road that follows the path, turning slightly left and then right.

(14) Follow the road on the right and continue north. Go straight ahead at the crossroads.

(15) At a left-hand bend, take the path on the right, then after a few metres follow the road on the left. At the crossroads, take the right-hand lane and continue straight ahead on this road.
At Kerjean, follow the road to the right. At the crossroads, keep to the right and continue along this road.

(16) At the fork, turn left towards Gwin Zégal to reach the car park at the start (S/E).

We had a wonderful round trip along the coastline without following the route described. In our opinion, this is one of the wildest stretches of coastline in the Côtes d'Armor. In the second part, before Bonaparte Beach, a section of the GR34 has turned into a crevasse. This is a fairly challenging hike due to its elevation and length.

Hike completed today in beautiful weather 🌞
The route did have a few hills, but as I said, nothing too challenging.
Quite a few walkers out and about, but it wasn't too crowded.
There were many viewpoints that were well worth the effort.
The distance is accurate (my watch said 16 km), completed in 3 hours and 21 minutes (excluding breaks)

A very pleasant hike in beautiful weather, with a nice mix of seaside, villages, countryside and woodland. It doesn't feel crowded, and although the climbs are challenging, they are not insurmountable. A wonderful day!

A very nice walk on high cliffs, which means "monte-descend". You need to be fit! The return through the countryside is easier and more pleasant. What's more, these places are steeped in history (the Shelburn network), so it would be a shame to ignore them. In Breton: Ur vale brav a-hed ar mor hag ar maez war tornaodoù uhel (a beautiful walk by the sea and in the countryside on high cliffs).

Very nice views, but the gr34 is very grassy with lots of nettles at the pointe de plouha.

We only did the southern part of this beautiful walk, a circuit of 6.5 km, and in the wrong direction, starting from the car park at the pointe de Plouha, before going up to Pors Moguer to reach Kerouriel, Port Logot, la Saulaie, then the Palus beach.
Be careful, the passage through La Saulaie is very muddy and not very passable. The climb back up to the Plouha cliffs from the Palus beach requires a good level of fitness.
A beautiful circuit

Walk on 6 April 2023 in fine weather. In view of the weather forecast, we shortened the route. In fact we set off from Port Moguer as far as point neuf, passing the Port de Gwin Zégal car park and then Port Moguer.
Brittany in the sun is really something!
Well done to our friendly members and to Visorando for all these tours.

From Port Moguer on the way to the GR 34, there is a steep and uneven section of path.

A very nice tour that we did in fine weather, the seaside scenery is magnificent, you have to take the time to walk down to the little port, the countryside part is very pleasant apart from the very end of the tour which takes the tarmac road.

Superb location. Very nice walk.
The GR section is magnificent and the inland section (which we did first thing in the morning, leaving from Chapelle Saint Samson) is not lacking in interest either. So much so that we passed through Keraviel and avoided passing twice on the stretch of GR between Gwin Zegal and Port Moguer.
Good hiking.

I only did part of the walk (due to lack of time!), the 1st loop from the car park to the tip of Plouha, then a return trip to see and go down to the port aux pieux! superb views, and wonderful photos throughout the walk; arrival at the end of the day at the port aux pieux... splendid colours, high tide, you'd think you were in Along Bay...!
Thank you for a wonderful trip.
