Keregal and the Corzic Valley

This route was used for the second edition of the Plouha 24-hour sports event. Starting from the superb Palus beach, it leads to Keregal Chapel and ends along the small coastal river of Plouhatin, the Corzic, which takes us back to the sea. The route is mainly through woodland.

Description of the walk

From Saint-Brieuc, take the D786 towards Plouha. Turn right towards Palus Beach, where there is a large car park. You can also cycle to the beach from the town centre: a shared cycle path has been provided.

(S/E) Leave the car park heading to the right (with the sea in front of you). At the corner where the car park meets the coastal path, turn right down a small lane and head towards an old hotel set slightly higher up: its name, “Les Sapins”, is still written in very large letters on the façade. Take this path, which is very much a public one, even though it is lined with flowers. This path leads to the old hotel and continues as a sunken track that climbs quite steeply. Reach the top of the hill after a steep climb.

(1) Pass a path on your right that leads back down; turn left and continue uphill, but this time on a wider path with a gentler gradient. Pass a grassy path on your left and continue along this lovely path, which joins a tarmac road. Follow it to the Keregal Chapel, perched on a promontory behind the trees.

At the chapel, turn right and follow the main road for about 1 km (signposted “aire naturelle de camping”), ignoring three junctions, including one immediately after. Pass the “Give Way 250 m” sign and continue to the next crossroads.

(2) Turn right onto a grassy track that descends gently towards the Coray (a tributary of the Corzic). After 200 m, turn right at a Fork in the road and arrive at another junction.

(3) Turn left onto a path that climbs quite steeply towards a wooded area. After a steep climb, veer right to follow the edge of the woods for 200 m and reach the summit.

(4) Take the barely visible, steeply sloping path on the right through the trees, which descends to the Corzic: traces of an old dark blue route still remain on the trees. After a few steps, take a hairpin bend to the right to continue descending. The path joins the Corzic. After four wooden footbridges, turn right: on the left is the private property of Moulin Frontière. Walk 150 m to reach a junction.

(5) Turn left onto a barely visible path that climbs steeply through the trees, with occasional log steps. You then follow the edge of a field before returning into the woodland at the end of it. Cross a wide path coming from the left and continue along the path through the woodland, which descends to a small road at Moulin Marec. Turn left onto this road and, just before the road bridge, take the wide path on the right that runs alongside the Corzic. You’ll reach a junction at Moulin de Corzic.

(6) Turn right to continue down towards Palus Beach and reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

The path running alongside the Corzic from Moulin Marec can be muddy in heavy rain.

At (3), you can take an alternative route by continuing straight on to reach (5) directly.

Toilets are available at Palus beach, along with opportunities for swimming, eating or cooling off.

Worth a visit

Palus Beach: a superb pebble beach (pebbles must not be collected). If you wish to swim, check the tide times as the pebbles must be exposed (they are from a tidal range of 8 m).
Restaurant, bar and crêperie to recharge your batteries.

Keregal Chapel: ‘Keregal’ in Breton refers to the boundary between the Gallo and Breton languages. The coastal river Corzic forms this boundary.
This chapel was rebuilt in 1775 (the date is visible on a stone above the entrance).

A really lovely route, with no mud as May was very dry. Be careful after the mill: the route described as leading down to Le Palus actually starts with a steep flight of steps on the left; we went straight on before turning back
