The two sides of Durfort via the Gravette Dam on Lake Cammazes

A very beautiful route, almost entirely on footpaths and often through woodland.
It will allow you to discover the different facets of the two sides of Durfort up to the Gravette dam on Lake Cammazes.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Place le Plo.
This route is not signposted and will sometimes coincide with theGR®7or aPR® trail without lingering on them.
The use of a GPS is strongly recommended.

(S/E) From the car park and the Atelier du Cuivre on your right, head towards the Cyrano bar and go around it. Before the bridge over the Sor, turn left into the pretty little Rue des Martineurs with its central gutter.

This leads to a small square. Approach the Route de Malamort and follow it to the right. Stay on this road and, a little further on, you will come to a reservoir on your right. Just after the reservoir, you will come to a track going up to the left.

(1) Turn left onto the grassy track. Climb up to the junction with a PR®.

(2) Continue a few metres to the right on this flat area. Turn onto the first path on the right. Shortly afterwards, you will see a rock with cup marks from the archaeological site. Further up stands the Peyre Ficade standing stone. Continue climbing up to Malcoustat. Enjoy the view of the valley.

(3) Viewpoint at Malcoustat. Continue for about a hundred metres. Turn right at the fork. You will reach Jacournassy.

(4) At this inverted fork, at an altitude of 645 metres, continue straight ahead to climb again to the Montagnet service road junction.

(5) In front of the road serving Montagnet, turn left. At the fork, turn right towards the T-junction.

(6) Leave the PR®. Turn left towards the dam. After 200 metres, join the wide forest track. Follow this track. Take the first left until you reach the Rabasset stream.

(7) Continue along the wide track that crosses the stream. Turn left a second time. Continue along this track to reach Lac des Cammazes, at the Gravette dam.

(8) Immediately turn right. Walk along part of the dam and find the Chemin de la Viroune. Turn sharply, then zigzag along the track to reach the entrance to the dam's technical facilities.

(9) Turn left. Further on, continue along the carriage road, which winds parallel to the Sor. Pass Le Rabasset. You will arrive near some small ruins on your right, below the track.

In the bend, leave the wide track and take a path on the left. Cross three fords. Ignore the paths crossing to the left and right and cross the Plan Perdu.

(11) First turn left then right. Follow the path, which winds its way under Les Fontanelles. Ignore two paths on the left. You will arrive at a T-junction in front of a reservoir.

(12) Facing the water reservoir, turn right. At the inverted fork, go straight ahead. At the three-way junction, continue along the small path on the left. Keep heading north-northwest to enter the Forêt de l'Aiguille. Ignore the direction of Roc de l'Homme. Follow the markings on the left that lead to a large clearing. Pass in front of a clearly visible charcoal kiln. There are a few others hidden around the area. You will arrive at the large clearing (location of a beech tree that fell in 2017).

(13) Continue to the right on the yellow marked path. Follow a general northward direction. Converge with the wide forestry track. Continue to the left towards a wide open X-shaped crossroads.

(14) Head straight ahead, taking the right-hand branch. The path forms two circular 180° loops. You will end up at a Y-junction below La Jasse.

(15) Turn right. Follow the twists and turns of the path to reach the road in front of the cemetery. Walk to the bridge over the Sor and cross it. Keep left to go around the Cyrano bar and reach the Place le Plo car park (A/D).

Forest hike.
Good start after a few hundred metres on the road.
Note that it seemed to me that the name of the bar was no longer Le Cyrano, but there's only one.
It starts right away at point 1 and goes to point 2. Take the opportunity to visit the Berniquaut oppidum.
The view is magnificent and the short detour gives you a chance to recharge your batteries. I highly recommend it.
And there's a bit of history to discover.
The rest of the route is easy going, with dirt tracks, forest paths and even a short stretch on tarmac.
After the dam, the hike becomes more enjoyable, with a trail from point 9 to point 12, followed by a superb forest crossing.
Shortly before point 14 on the map, you'll come to a forest track, which isn't very interesting.
If you're fit, have walking sticks and good shoes, there's a path to look for on the right in the bend before point 14. It's a steep descent, almost straight down to Durfort, and great fun.
I met one trail runner and two hunters who were doing it on the way up – crazy!
The route is well marked and the time given is fairly generous. It's mostly shaded.
Take advantage of the road start to warm up. From point 1, it climbs for a good hour under the trees.
Thank you for the trail.

Don't forget to visit the village of Durfort. It's a very interesting village for its crafts, history and architecture. Fill your water bottle at the excellent drinking fountain and enjoy this peaceful spot on the banks of the Sor.

Hello,
Completed on Sunday, 24 September, in superb weather, nothing more to add except that the dam trails are very popular, particularly with mountain bikers and a few families with children.
Otherwise, be careful at point eight, where a gate blocks access to the path that descends below the dam. An unauthorised passage has been opened on the right-hand side of the gate, so we are on this part of the trail in violation until the sign further down that prohibits access to the top.
The bonus is a half-pint of beer on the café terrace when you arrive. Don't wait on the terrace, as the owner takes orders inside.
Thank you for this suggestion.
Edit of 3 October: Confirmation during another hike in the same area: the famous gate does indeed have a sign prohibiting entry to all walkers. That said, crossing the dam is interesting because of the explanatory signs along the way, and then descending to the right bank of the Sort via the path on the right adds nothing to the hike except for being very informative.

A very beautiful and varied hike with the lively village of Durfort, which is very pleasant to see. We went for a swim in Lake Saint Ferréol after the hike.

Hello JLBRICE,
Thank you for your feedback.
I will review the wording of this description, which was one of the first ones proposed.
I myself find fault with it.

Happy hiking!

The route on the map is very accurate; it's a shame that the numbered markers hide the most complex sections; their positioning needs to be improved overall.
I appreciated the original style and vivid vocabulary of the description! However, the accuracy of the text needs to be reviewed, as some of the information is misleading or in an inconsistent order.
In short, there is room for improvement!

I will review this issue once I have completed the route again.
However, it is clearly stated that this route is not marked and that the use of a GPS is recommended.

Interesting route, partly shaded, difficult to follow with the map, lack of markings, fortunately with GPS it's not too much of a problem but you have to stay alert.

Very beautiful hike, but the route is approximate in places and the description is imprecise.

As noted, the ford does not exist.

A beautiful hike just an hour from Toulouse.
No problem following the GPX track with a phone app.
With my GPS watch, I found a cumulative elevation gain of +-805m.

A beautiful route and a beautiful hike, done on this frosty but sunny winter's day, with beautiful layers of frost on the bushes, a splendid view of the snow-covered Pyrenees, and ancient sunken paths!!! I will definitely do it again with friends or with my grandchildren.
Please note:
- between 11 and 12, the route is now on a forest road and there are no more fords (the two streams are "channelled" and pass well below the forest road).
- Shortly before 13, there are not one, but three charcoal kilns; the other two are a little further up (a few dozen metres): a fascinating glimpse into local life in the last century (like the almost completely overgrown village next to the footbridge near 10!). Signs of a strong local life in the last century.
