Description of the walk

The start is opposite the town hall. Follow the yellow markings for route no. 24 of the Brenne Regional Nature Park, entitled “Les coteaux de l’Abloux”.

(S/E) Take the D59 south-east, then turn right onto the small road leading to Quinquempois.

(1) At the bottom of the descent, on the bend, turn left onto the track, cross the ford over the Abloux, then head uphill to join a small road.

(2) First turn left onto the Route de Fougerolles, then head down to the left towards the houses at the Anciennes Forges d’Abloux. A signpost shows you the way to the old site on the Abloux. The grassy path runs alongside the back of a house before reaching the remains of a bridge. As you cross it, you can admire the remaining arches on either side and the banks of the River Abloux.

(3) Retrace your steps.

(2) Continue westwards to reach the hamlet of Fougerolles.

(4) Continue along the grassy path to the right towards the west, then head uphill to the left. At the junction, go downhill to the right, then turn left. Once past the stream, follow the path as it climbs back up to the hamlet of Chassingrimont.

(5) Take the road on the right for 150 m, then turn left onto a grassy track. You’ll reach a pond; go round it on the left, then follow the D1b towards Saint-Civran, to the north-west.

(6) 800 m after leaving the pond, at elevation 216, turn right onto a path lined with hedges. Follow this path for about 2 km until you reach a small road.

(7) Carry on straight ahead towards the north-east through the houses of Le Bouchais, then go down a lane which leads to a ford at the corner of a house. Cross the Abloux via the footbridge, then continue along a grassy track. Carry on along a wider path which leads to the D54.

(8) Take the path leading uphill to the right. At the next junction, carry on straight ahead until you reach the D59. Turn left to reach the hamlet of Chambord.

(9) In the hamlet, follow the signpost and go up the street on the right, which leads to a path running behind a farm. Continue north-east. The path leads to a small road; take this to the right to reach the Guignemour farm complex.

(10) Continue along the path, flanked by shrubs to the east, which narrows and becomes a footpath.

(11) At the junction, head down to the right towards the south-west, pass a path on your right, then head back up through the woods to join the D54.

(12) Turn right to return to Chazelet and continue through the village to admire the church and the gate of the private château. Then head back towards the town hall and the starting point (S/E).

A lovely walk. The paths were quite wet, but we’d been warned, so it came as no surprise.
One issue: between points 11 and 12, the path is barely passable as it’s overgrown with brambles.
Bear this in mind!

At some junctions there are no yellow markings, particularly on the second half of the route, which means you’re always wondering whether you’re on the right track… This makes the walk a bit stressful…

A lovely walk, as luck would have it, with frost and sunshine on 1 January 2021. A bit of road at the start, but not too busy.

A lovely walk, often in the shade, with the advantage of taking far more footpaths than roads.
Don’t hesitate to round off the walk with a visit to the village of St Benoit du Saut!
